Sudan 2-1 Burkina Faso: Falcons of Jediane snatch quarterfinal spot with victory thanks to Angola's slip against Cote d'Ivoire

Sudan's victory over Burkina Faso, the team's first in the competition since its 1970 triumph, saw it progress out of the group stages at the expense of Angola which was well beaten by a much changed Cote d'Ivoire outfit.
Needing a goal difference swing of three, the east African's scored twice through Eltaib Mudather in either half to complete a remarkable turn around. The Falcons lost their opening match, but still managed to secure a quarterfinal berth despite a late strike from Issiaka Ouedraogo.
Burkina Faso's Moumouni Dagano was prevented from putting his side ahead in the opening exchanges following a perfectly timed challenge from Najem Abdullah. However, Sudan was forced into an early substitution as the defender picked up an injury after colliding with his own keeper in the process.
Burkina Faso's lone striker continued to menace the Falcon of Jediane's defense as he watched his looping header agonizingly bounce wide of the target.
Sudan suddenly began to find its rhythm with quick passing in the final third with Mudather close to creating space in the Burkina penalty area before being crowded out.
The Sudanese striker was not to be deterred, however, as he took advantage of some poor defending from the Stallions. Mamadou Tall came crashing in with a sliding challenge which Mudather expertly evaded before calmly curling his shot around Daouda Diakite to put Sudan ahead.
Jonathan Pitroipa wasted Burkina Faso's best opportunity prior to the break when his weak shot was easily collected by El Hadi after the midfielder had been found with a perfectly weighted through ball.
The Falcon of Jediane's first half toil was close to being undone when Pitroipa's beautiful flicked pass gave Ouedraogo a chance to level. The substitute steadied himself but could only put his effort wide of the target as El Hadi was quick to close the angle.
Both sides had opportunities in the closing stages but it was Sudan which was left celebrating. The Stallions keeper failed to clear a long goal kick, allowing Mudather to round the flat footed Diakite and roll the ball into an empty net.
Sudan finished the on the back foot and conceded an injury time goal when Ouedraogo beat a helpless El Hadi to the ball. Despite this, there was little time left for the Stallions to find an equalizer as Sudan registered a spot in the quarterfinals, and a match against Group A winner Zambia on Feb. 4.
