Seattle Sounders FC 1-2 Monterrey: Both sides through to the CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinals

Monterrey eliminated Comunicaciones and finished top of Group D with a 2-1 win in Seattle on Tuesday night.

By Zac Lee Rigg

Monterrey claimed top spot in Group D with a 2-1 away win against Seattle Sounders FC in a CONCACAF Champions League match that Monterrey coach Victor Vucetich called "a great game for the teams."

The attendance of 15,866 marked the third highest in the CCL this year, but paled compared to the 64,000 that attended Kasey Keller's regular season sendoff Saturday. Keller, 41, was rested, so Bryan Meredith made his debut with Terry Boss and Josh Ford injured.

"I thought Meredith played well for a guy in his first game, and this was a fairly big game. I thought he was composed," Sounders FC coach Sigi Schmid said. "Keller had an emotional game Saturday and [we] felt [it] not best to come with him today."

Meredith's goal was breached three minutes into the game. Humberto Suazo exploited Seattle's high defensive line, playing a ball behind for Dario Carreno to score his fourth CCL goal of the year.

Fredy Montero, wearing the captain's armband with Keller and Brad Evans on the bench, equalized three minutes before the half with a curling free kick.

Monterrey regained the lead on the hour mark, with Cesar Delgado capping off a sweeping move.

The Rayados starting 'keeper, Jonathan Orozco, was replaced by Juan de Dios Ibarra in the 73rd minute after landing awkwardly. Ibarra made one point-blank save to preserve the win.

Zach Scott collected a yellow card which means he is suspended for the match. By finishing second in the group Seattle will likely receive a more difficult quarterfinal opponent.

"It matters in terms of the pairings because most of the group winners are going to be Mexican teams, so now the chances are that you're going to match up with a Mexican team," Schmid said. "That makes the task a little bit harder."
