LOS ANGELES -- Skill overcame pride in the season’s final Superclasico, as the Los Angeles Galaxy beat city rivals Chivas USA 1-0 courtesy of a 53rd minute winner from Chad Barrett.
The league-leading Galaxy labored through a physical first half against the resolute
Goats, already eliminated from the playoffs, but broke through shortly after half time on
Barrett’s headed goal. A makeshift Galaxy attack missing designated players Landon Donovan and Robbie Keane was nevertheless able to convert on one of the numerous chances created by a Galaxy midfield led by Beckham.
Barrett, whose goal provided the difference in the Galaxy’s 1-0 victory over Chivas
on May 21st, initiated the winning sequence with a flick-on to forward partner Adam
Cristman. Cristman chased the ball down behind the Chivas defense and lofted a superb
cross across the face of goal to Barrett, whose header easily beat Chivas goalkeeper Dan
Kennedy.
Galaxy goalkeeper Josh Saunders made a key intervention in the 63rd minute to snuff out
a Chivas breakaway.
Cristman almost doubled the lead in the 72nd minute when he headed a Beckham cross on
goal, but Kennedy made a strong save to force it wide.
Barrett put in a lively, if imprecise, shift during the first half. Service down the right flank
through David Beckham and Paolo Cardozo resulted in several chances for Barrett that
went unconverted. Barrett forced Kennedy into a nice save in the 24th minute on a bicycle
kick in the box, and his 39th minute header off a Todd Dunivant cross hit Kennedy’s left
post.
The Galaxy’s victory gives it a record of 13-5-3 all-time against Chivas USA in the
series.
