Two goals from Chris Wondolowski put the forward into a three-way tie atop the MLS scoring charts and gave the San Jose Earthquakes a 2-1 win over the New England Revolution.
"He is in great form right now and back on top of the league in goals scored," San Jose coach Frank Yallop said of his forward. "He started well this year and then had a bit of a slow stretch, but he is finding the spaces now and putting away his chances. We know he has the ability and he is demonstrating that right now."
The striker scored in the eighth and 82nd minute to bookend a Benny Feilhaber goal and send the Revs crashing to a fourth straight loss. His first goal came off a long ball from his own goalkeeper, which he brought down with his first touch and lashed home with his second. The 28-year-old headed home his second goal to grab all three points.
“It felt good to get back in the win column tonight and I am glad that I could contribute to that," Wondolowski said. "On the first goal, I know that Bing (David Bingham) has great distribution so I timed my run a little bit and found the space, and I was able to put it away. The second one was a great buildup and Sam Cronin put it on a platter for me. I just had to put it into the open net.”
In between those goals Feilhaber pulled his team level on after a flury of chances finally came to the midfielder to poke home.
D.C. United's Dwayne De Rosario and New York Red Bulls striker Thierry Henry are the two tied with Wondolowski at 14 goals in MLS play this year.
The Revs will have one final match in front of the home fans on Oct. 15 against the Columbus Crew, and San Jose will be in Seattle to face the Sounders next Saturday.
