The Timbers, who are sitting just outside of the playoff picture, were able to knock off their rivals and spoil the opening of their new stadium.
On the afternoon the Vancouver Whitecaps opened the brand-new BC Place Stadium, the Timbers went north of the border and walked away with a 1-0 victory on Sunday.
Kenny Cooper scored the game's only goal with a long shot in the 25th minute for Portland, which kept its playoff hopes alive. It was Cooper's seventh goal of the season.
While the Whitecaps are last in the Western Conference, the Timbers are still hoping to make a push as the regular season comes to a close. Portland now has 40 points and is tied with the New York Redbulls just outside of a playoff spot.
