Fredy Montero put New England's playoff hopes to bed with a brace in a 2-1 win for the Seattle Sounders.
"I thought in the first half we were really pretty sluggish. We were lucky that we made them pay for a mistake” Seattle coach Sigi Schmid said. "In the second half we did what we needed to do. We played much better, we were really compact, and I thought we did what we had to do today."
Diego Fagundez, making his first MLS start, opened the scoring for New England 35 minutes into the match with a headed effort from a Benny Fielhaber corner after the Revs dominated much of the early going.
But Seattle responded immediately. Montero jumped on some dreadful defending from New England's Ryan Cochrane and pounded home his 10th goal of the season just a minute after the Revs had taken the lead.
The match went to the half level, but Montero made sure the tied score didn't last very long in the second frame. Nate Jaqua chested a deflected ball to Montero who slotted home the winner just two minutes after the restart.
"He is in good form right now and when a goal scorer is hot you just sort of continue to bet on him," Schmid said of Montero. "We were looking to get somewhere between 45 and 60 minutes out of him; he rewarded us with two goals and hopefully he will carry that form into Tuesday's Open Cup game."
The Revs failed to create much in the late stages of the match and fell to a third consecutive defeat. For Seattle, the match marked the club's third straight win and pushed the team into Tuesday's Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup final against Chicago on a high note.
