CSD Comunicaciones 2-2 Seattle Sounders FC: MLS outfit into knockout rounds of CONCACAF Champions League
Osvaldo Alonso equalized at the end of each half to preserve a draw with Comunicaciones and help Seattle advance out of the CCL group stages.
By Zac Lee Rigg
Seattle Sounders FC sealed a berth in the knockout rounds of the CONCACAF Champions League thanks to a come-from-behind 2-2 draw with Comunicaciones in Guatemala City Tuesday night.
"Our goal as a team was to tie," Sounders FC coach Sigi Schmid said. "Comunicaciones was playing a lot of long balls in behind so we had to do a better job of making sure we ran and got to those long balls. Our team has very good character so I was very confident that we could come and tie the game."
The Guatemalan side opened the scoring on a long ball that broke Seattle's offside trap. Transito Montepeque lobbed Kasey Keller from outside the box in the seventh minute.
Osvaldo Alonso equalized with the half coming to a close. He celebrated his deflected strike by holding up the inside of his shin guard, inscribed with a birthday wish to his wife, up to the camera.
"Even though he doesn't score most the goals he's our most valuable player," Seattle fullback Tyson Wahl said of the Cuban midfielder. "I think if you ask anyone else they would say that. So even if he is not scoring goals he is making a difference elsewhere."
Comunicaciones capitalized on a bundled Keller punch from a corner to take the lead again, this time through Rafael Morales, but Alonso once again equalized with a minute left in the half.
"I'm very happy," Alonso said. "I'm very proud of myself. We get a result tonight. We get to advance to the next round, which is good for the team."
Seattle peppered the Guatemalans' goal with 26 shots, but only put two on target. The Sounders advance to the knockout stage of the CCL for the first time in club history.
