Toronto FC 1-1 Pumas UNAM: Draw keeps CONCACAF Champions League hopes alive for both sides

After losing heavily away to Pumas, Toronto held the Mexican side to a 1-1 draw in Canada, meaning both can still qualify for the knockout rounds.

A 1-1 draw between Toronto FC and Pumas in BMO Field meant that both sides remain in contention to qualify out of Group C in the CONCACAF Champions League. The draw was impressive compared to the 4-0 hiding the Mexican outfit handed Toronto in the reverse fixture, in Mexico City.

The Canadians, with seven points, are tied with FC Dallas, one behind Pumas.

"I think when you watch the whole game, before you'd be happy with one point but after the match there is a little disappointment that we gave it away," TFC coach Aron Winter said. "There are two sides, happy but also disappointed."

The host side opened the scoring. Peri Marosevic slotted the ball in at the far corner with a tidy side-footed shot after Danny Koevermans set him up.

"The ball came into the box and Ryan [Johnson] got a head on it and it fell to Koevermans' feet," Marosevic said. "I knew behind those big guys to be underneath in case the ball dropped down and that's exactly what happened. The ball came to me and I saw a wide open corner and all I had to do was put it in."

Pumas equalized from a corner in the second half, Marco Palacios connecting with a thundering header that overcame Milos Kocic's hand to squirm in.

"It's disappointing especially since we are conceding goals on set pieces," Toronto midfielder Matt Stinson said. "I think that's the most disappointing thing, not the fact that we tied but the fact they we gave away a goal we shouldn't have conceded."

Pumas also clacked two long-range efforts off the upright. Diego de Buen rocketed a shot off the post before the scoring began and Andy Iro's head deflected a shot onto the post with Kocic stranded with 10 minutes left to play. In all, Pumas out-shot Toronto 16 to eight, forcing Kocic into six saves.
