Colorado Rapids 1-2 Real España: Carlos Pavon brace yanks the Rapids down to last in the group

Carlos Pavon punished two defensive errors to give Honduran outfit Real Espana a 2-1 win over the Rapids in Colorado during CCL play.

By Zac Lee Rigg

COMMERCE CITY, Colo. - Carlos Pavon scored a brace to lead Real Espana past the Colorado Rapids, 2-1, in the CONCACAF Champions League.

The Honduran striker chipped a delicate shot into the roof of the net to open the scoring in the 12th minute. Later, the 37-year-old capitalized on a howler of a defensive header by Michael Holody to score the game-winning goal.

Between the strikes Andre Akpan bundled home a loose ball in the box to temporarily level the score and then the Rapids pinged a shot off Espana's upright.

"I think we were a bit unlucky on two different occasions," Akpan said. "I thought we did pretty well. We dominated and had good opportunities. I think if we put one or two away in the first half, it would have been a totally different game, but that's how it goes."

In the first half, the Rapids out-shot Espana 11 to two, and it was 22 to seven by fulltime.

"I think we are learning an awful lot in this competition," Colorado coach Gary Smith said. "The first half display really reflected some positive energy and a real aggressive style to the game.  Individual situations are costing us quite dearly, and we had enough chances to not only be on level terms but probably be in front. When young players play, and they are inexperienced, you are going to get mistakes. That is something everybody has to accept."

The two teams are level on four points in Group B, but Colorado is last due to goal differential.
