Salzburg 2-0 Paris Saint-Germain: Svento screamer gives Austrians vital Group F victory
The midfielder's supreme effort clinched a wonderful win and condemned the big-spending French to a defeat that could lead to their elimination from the Europa League
A thumping volley from Dusan Svento sealed a famous 2-0 win for Salzburg over Paris Saint-Germain in Austria on Thursday evening, to boost their chances of qualifying from Europa League Group F.
The Slovakian's thunderous effort in injury time came after Jakob Jantscher had given his side the lead, meaning that both teams have seven points going into the final round of fixtures.
The home side knew that victory was necessary in order to maintain its aspirations of progression from Group F, and it took the game to the Ligue 1 side from kick-off.
Jantscher was a particularly dangerous opponent, and after an opening spell dominated by the Austrians, it was he who gave his side the advantage on the 20 minute mark.
A glorious cross from the right by Christoph Leitgeb found Jantscher steaming in at the back post, and he duly volleyed past Nicolas Douchez from inside the area.
Jantscher almost embarrassed Doucher minutes later when his long-range strike somehow squirmed through his grasp, but dribbled agonizingly wide of the target.
PSG woke up. On the stroke of halftime, Christoph Jallet broke forward on the left hand side, and after cutting inside, curled his shot wide of the far post, failing to test Alexander Walke.
The second half saw the French camp in Salzburg's half, and threaten Walke's goal with far more regularity. Nene and Mevlut Erding both tested the German shot-stopper, then Bahebeck almost squeezed an effort inside the near post.
The visitors continued to threaten. On came Kevin Gameiro, and he almost rescued a point for his side, but directed his effort on goal inches wide of the target. Salzburg weathered the storm, however, and clinched victory in the most stunning fashion. Simon Cziommer's injury-time corner was deflected to the back post, and Svento waited patiently before thrashing an incredible volley into Douchez's top corner, and ensure PSG was beaten.
The result means that both Salzburg and PSG have seven points apiece going into the final round of matches. Salzburg travel to Slovan Bratislava, while the French host already-qualified Athletic Bilbao in Paris.
