FC Dallas became the first American side, be it MLS or national team, to beat a Mexican team on Mexican soil, ever. The 1-0 win over Pumas UNAM on Wednesday night was the 50th attempt at the feat overall.
The United States national team has lost 23 and drawn once in Mexico. MLS clubs had lost 23 and drawn four. But FC Dallas, playing just its eight international match, finally broke the hex.
"I'll tell you the first man who broke the four-minute mile was a man named Roger Bannister. The next week, I think another six people broke the four-minute mile, because they believed in it," Dallas head coach Schellas Hyndman said. "For us, for the first team to beat a good Mexican team in Mexico, I hope that more MLS teams will have the same courage to play good soccer and I hope that we continue to find success here."
Marvin Chavez scored the game's only goal in the 66th minute, finishing the scraps when a Jair Benitez shot came back off the post.
Pumas, Mexico's reigning champion, was playing a largely reserve side.
