Germany international made the difference as Bavarians cruised into the Champions League group stage

Bayern Munich advanced to the Champions League group stage following a 1-0 victory away to Zurich. Having won the first leg 2-0 in Munich, the Germans came into the match needing only to avoid a hefty defeat, but nonetheless extended their winning streak to three games in all competitions.
The result came at a cost, however, as Mario Gomez suffered what appeared to be a hamstring strain shortly before halftime.
Gomez was withdrawn at the interval, but nonetheless managed to get his name on the score sheet. In the seventh minute, Thomas Muller played the 26-year old past his marker, and after a dribble, the former Stuttgart man superbly tucked his finish inside the left post. He later had a good effort saved before heading a corner over the bar.
With the result of the tie nearly put to rest last week, the second leg was a rather lackluster affair. Amine Chermiti had an early shot miss narrowly wide for the hosts, but the opener came shortly thereafter and deflated Zurich's hopes of turning around the result.
With the hosts needing four unanswered goals to progress, the pace of the match slowed over the course of the second half.
Nils Petersen and Franck Ribery each had quality chances to score Bayern's second goal in the second half, but solid goalkeeping from Johnny Leoni kept the match at 1-0.
Bayern will be disappointed not to have won by a greater margin, but it will nonetheless be pleased to have qualified for the Champions League proper. Zurich has crashed out of the Champions League, and it will now move on to the Europa League group stage.
