It was a rather uneventful encounter in Sicily, as neither side could break its opponents down, and a point was the fairest outcome. Catania went close through the likes of Alejandro Gomez and Maxi Lopez, but failed to find the elusive winning goal. For new coaches Vincenzo Montella and Giuseppe Sannino there were plenty of signs to suggest their side's can kick on after picking up a point each.

ChievoChievo 2-2 NovaraNovara

Domenico Di Carlo kicked off his second stint as coach of Chievo in disappointing fashion, as a late goal from Novara completed the promoted side's comeback from two goals down to draw 2-2 at the Bentegodi.

The Flying Donkeys made the ideal start, scoring inside five minutes through captain Sergio
Pellissier, after Cyril Thereau played him in from the left, and the one-time Italy striker coolly struck the ball past Samir Ujkani.

They doubled their lead on 24 minutes through an impressive counter-attack involving Perparim Hetemaj and Sergio Pellissier, as Thereau finished the move off, capping a productive first half performance.

However, Novara refused to lie down and grabbed one back just three minutes later through Francesco Marianini, who combined with Pablo Granoche and Takayuki Morimoto to slide in past Stefano Sorrentino.

The drama continued, as Gennaro Sardo was given his marching orders with less than 20 minutes to go, and Novara capitalised, as Massimo Paci scored a header four minutes from time to give the visitors a first point back in Serie A.

FiorentinaFiorentina 2-0 Bologna Bologna

The Artemio Franchi outfit have also made a winning start to the new campaign, after consigning Bologna to a 2-0 defeat.

Manuel Pasqual's 20th minute cross from the left found Alberto Gilardino in the box, and he nodded past Jean-Francois Gillet to give his side the advantage.

The victory was confirmed on 47 minutes, as Stevan Jovetic, on his return from injury, acutely played Alessio Cerci in in the area, and the wide man delivered the second goal for the hosts, which will delight Sinisa Mihajlovic after an uncertain summer in Tuscany.

GenoaGenoa 2-2 AtalantaAtalanta

Genoa and Atalanta battled to the death as a four-goal thriller ensued at the Marassi. The two sides shared the spoils and a new Argentine No.10 made a splash on his debut.

Alberto Malesani's side took the lead on six minutes through Miguel Veloso, who poked the ball past Andrea Consigli from Rodrigo Palacio's neat ball from the right hand side.

However, Maxi Moralez made sure he made an impact on his debut for Atalanta just two minutes later. Fellow debutant Luca Cigarini played in the former Velez attacker, and he threaded the ball past Sebastian Frey.

Just two minutes before half-time, Moralez grabbed a second, as German Denis enabled his compatriot to take on Frey, and he put the Serie B champions ahead with a delicate finish.

Despite their brilliance going forward, they were not so at the back. Giandomenico Mesto pounced on a defensive blunder by the visitors, as he slotted the ball past Consigli to level the scores and ensure his side finished with a point.

LecceLecce 0-2 UdineseUdinese

Francesco Guidolin's meen seem to have picked up from where they left off last season in domestic matters after recording a comfortable two-goal victory at the Via del Mare.

Dusan Basta opened the scoring for the Zebrette in only the second minute after Giovanni Pasquale's cross found the Serb in the area and, all alone, he easily brushed the ball past Julio Sergio.

They grabbed a second goal on 16 minutes thanks to Antonio Di Natale, who added to his goal in the Champions League play-off against Arsenal by ensuring Basta and Gabriel Torje's neat exchange down the right was aptly concluded.

From there the Friuli side remained in control of the game, reducing their hosts to few opportunities to get back into the game.
