Napoli 6-1 Genoa: Cavani nets brace as home side finds it all too easy against Malesani's men

Four goals in the opening 45 minutes set the Partenopei on their way to victory during a scintillating performance.

Napoli was sinply irresistible at the Stadio San Paolo, outclassing Genoa 6-1 in Wednesday's round of Serie A matches.

Edinson Cavani's brace headlined a first half blitz for the Walter Mazzarri's men, with Cristobal Jorquera's solitary strike proving little consolation for the visitors as further goals from Marek Hamsik and Goran Pandev sent the hosts into the interval 4-1 up. Efforts from Walter Gargano and Juan Camilo Zuniga after the break completed the rout for the home side, which looked to end 2011 on a high.

Mazzarri’s men stamped their dominance on the game from the off, and were ahead after 12 minutes through Cavani, who was left with a straightforward finish against Sebastian Frey after Christian Maggio’s through pass.

The home onslaught continued, and Cavani could only volley Gargano’s cross into the side netting before Gargano himself tested Frey with a drive from just outside the penalty area.

However, the second goal was coming, and it duly arrived in the 17th minute through the opportunism of Hamsik. A snap shot by Pandev took a deflection off Andreas Granqvist into the path of the Slovak, who wasted little time in finding the net from a few yards out.

Genoa was falling apart, and the team's defensive disorganization told once more as Cavani broke the offside trap again to get on the end of Pandev’s pass and slot beyond the hapless Frey.

Despite looking to be well on its way to a thrashing, the visiting team managed to pull a goal back three minutes later through Jorquera, whose low drive slipped under the glove of Morgan De Sanctis and nestled into the back of the net.

It was a goal completely against the run of play, and Napoli wasted little time in putting Genoa under the cosh in a bid to restore the three goal advantage. Gokham Inler glanced his header agonizingly wide of the far post just past the half-hour mark.

Napoli was not to be denied, and Pandev added the fourth goal on the stroke of halftime. The Macedonian latched onto Hamsik’s through ball, advanced unchallenged into the penalty area and beat Frey with a low shot to send his side into the break with a standing ovation from the home support.

The home side picked up where it left off after the restart, and Gargano fired home from outside the area to further increase the advantage.

Cavani almost grabbed his hat trick just before the hour mark, but after finding space in the box, could only place his finish wide of the far post.

The tempo of the game died down shortly after, but there was still time for Zuniga to grab another 10 minutes from the end, as the right back hammered the ball into the net from distance to complete the rout.

Despite the win, Napoli remains in 6th place with 23 points, due to Inter's concurrent victory over Lecce which keeps the club two points ahead of the Naples outfit. Genoa meanwhile is in 10th place with 21 points.
