After an injury-plagued stint at AC Milan and falling out of the starting XI for the United States at the most recent Gold Cup, Oguchi Onyewu showed his new teammates at Sporting Club de Portugal that he can still contribute.
The United States international assisted on the Portuguese side’s opening goal to lead the club past storied Italian club Juventus in a 2-1 victory at Toronto's BMO Field. Onyewu headed the ball toward Yannick Djaló, who volleyed the close range shot for a precise poacher's finish 13 minutes into the match. Djalo would double his tally, speeding past Juve’s defense in its final third to score the winner.
Onyewu appeared comfortable in his movement and marking against the once formidable Serie A club. He won headers and made some interceptions and his performance indicated that he might be finally getting over the injury issues that have plagued him since rupturing his patellar tendon in an World Cup qualifier back in October 2009.
If that is the case, United States head coach Bob Bradley might finally have some good news after seeing his defense play inconsistently throughout last month’s Gold Cup.
Juventus made the game interesting late with a 80th minute goal by club legend Alessandro Del Piero. Still, Sporting’s defense held strong and the team finished the game with a win.
