SAN DIEGO - American competition, Mexican competition, it makes no difference for Cristiano Ronaldo.

The former World Player of the Year came alive late in the second half with a hat-trick to push Real Madrid past a difficult Chivas Guadalajara side in a 3-0 victory at Qualcomm Stadium.

Playing against an extremely stingy defense led by goalkeeper Luis Ernesto Michel for 72 minutes, it almost appeared as if the game would end in a draw. Then came the 73rd minute.

Running into the penalty box with just one man on him, Madrid forward Karim Benezema found Ronaldo charging full-speed at goal. The France international crossed the ball into the Portuguese winger’s legs and the 26-year-old had an emphatic finish past Michel.

Real Madrid's manager Jose Mourinho believes that no matter where Ronaldo plays, he is always motivated to show what he's capable of and displayed that with his goal.

"Cristiano is Cristiano," said the former Chelsea and Inter boss. "Always happy, always motivated and proud to play no matter if he's in China, Japan or the USA. He's self-motivated when it comes to playing well and scoring. We knew we wanted to play this way, to play well."

After that moment, it became easy for the Spanish capital club. Ronaldo’s Portugese compatriot Pepe was idiotically fouled in the penalty area by Chivas' Omar Arellano as he hip-checked the defender in the 76th minute. Seconds later, even the goal’s netting couldn’t stop Ronaldo. He fired his penalty attempt past Michel with such strength that the ball ripped through the net.

Ronaldo finally capped off his hat-trick a few minutes later as Mesuit Ozil found space on the right channel of the pitch and darted the ball into the box to find Ronaldo for an easy finish. Another easy night carving apart North American competition for the star player. Yet, Madrid was given a good test by the Mexico Primera Division club.

Despite having 66 percent of possession and 11 shots on goal, Jose Mourinho’s men had a difficult time cracking a Chivas defense that stayed compact and countered well.

"This was very good training for us," said Mourinho.

With Iker Casillas across the pitch, Michel seemed determined to show what he was capable of in front of arguably the world’s best goalkeeper. Up against an offense that cost over 250 million euros, he had nine saves, blocking shot after shot, including a point blank attempt by Ronaldo in the first half. Unfortunately for the 31-year-old, his offense couldn’t muster much against Los Blancos.

Chivas only had seven shots, none of them were on target.

That isn't going to cut it against Los Galácticos.
