New York Red Bulls 1-0 Paris Saint-Germain: French Revolution falters as MLS side snatches surprise Emirates Cup victory

Debuts for Menez, Bisevac and Matuidi fail to inspire victory for Parisian side, as first half Lindpere effort secures win for Americans despite absence of Henry

The New York Red Bulls secured a surprise 1-0 victory over Paris Saint-Germain in the opening game of the Emirates Cup, thanks to a first half goal from Estonian midfielder Joel Lindpere.

PSG boss Antoine Kombouare handed starts to new signings Milan Bisevac, Jeremy Menez and Blaise Matuidi, whilst captain Thierry Henry was a notable absence for the Red Bulls – the 33-year-old’s introduction instead being saved for Sunday’s clash against his former side.

The French side was unable to capitalise upon their early dominance, with captain Mamadou Sakho squandering the best chance of the opening encounters when he rose unmarked to meet Jean-Christophe Bahebeck’s corner, only to head straight into the arms of the Red Bulls keeper.

The 21-year-old Sakho was soon back on defensive duty, with the centre-back forced to make a number of last ditch headed clearances as New York wingers Jan Gunnar Solli and Dane Richards routinely exposed space in behind the PSG backline.

Striker Juan Agudelo continually caused problems for the Parisian side, and went close to breaking the deadlock after 24 minutes, only for his shot from a tight angle to be well saved by goalkeeper Salvatore Sirigu.

The MLS side took the lead two minutes later, when Lindpere held his run well to meet Roy Miller’s through ball and slot the ball past the keeper into the left hand side of the net.

PSG continued to look lackluster in attack and defense as the half drew to a close, only threatening from set pieces, with Serbian center back Bisevac tamely heading the lofted free kick of Baheback straight into the arms of Sirigu.

Christophe Jallet’s curling free kick from 20 yards out skimmed over the bar and onto the top of the net seven minutes into the second half, whilst Menez’s effort from inside the box on 54 minutes just evaded the top left hand corner as the Parisians searched for an equalizer.

Debutant Menez then tumbled in the box on 64 minutes, having latched on to Mevlut Erding’s flick on, the Frenchman’s driving run appeared to have been unfairly halted by Red Bulls left back Miller, only for the official to wave away any penalty claims.

The 24-year-old former Roma winger continued to provide PSG’s main source of attacking impetus as they continued to press for a late goal, only for the French side to continually fail to convert their possession into concrete opportunities.

Red Bulls right back Chris Albright made way for the notable introduction of John Rooney, the younger brother of Wayne, with 10 minutes remaining, as the MLS side looked to shore up the midfield and ensure a well earned victory.

Whilst only a pre-season friendly, the defeat will be of concern to the Ligue One side's Qatari investors, and will no doubt hasten their pursuit of Javier Pastore, with PSG’s lack of creativity in midfield clearly demonstrated at the Emirates Stadium.
