Seattle Sounders FC 0-7 Manchester United: Wayne Rooney hat-trick lifts Red Devils

The star striker put on a show as his Manchester United squad easily defeated one of Major League Soccer's stronger teams.

SEATTLE - Glancing at the score, you would think it was an American football game.

Manchester United rolled into Seattle's NFL stadium and destroyed the Sounders 7-0 in front of over 60,000 at CenturyLink Field in the English Premier League club's second game of its preseason tour of the United States.

Wayne Rooney recorded three goals and an assist in the second half alone to guide Manchester United, which only led by one at halftime. Michael Owen, Mame Biram Diouf, Park Ji-Sung, and Gabriel Obertan also got on the scoreboard.

"Every chance we got, we scored," Manchester United midfielder Ryan Giggs said. "That's what sometimes separates good players from great players."

Rooney was not in the starting lineup for manager Sir Alex Ferguson, who opted to bring the star striker off the bench at halftime instead. But the English striker let his presence be known shortly after entering the game along with names like Michael Carrick and Park.

“Obviously we saw their bench," Sounders head coach Sigi Schmid said. "When you come with Carrick off the bench and you come with Rooney off the bench and come with Park off the bench, you’re going to create some problems. Our bench is not the same."

Rooney scored his first goal in the 52nd minute after Diouf gave the team a two-goal cushion three minutes earlier. He went on to score again in the 69th minute, assist Park's strike in the 71st minute and add one more goal of his own in the 72nd.

For those counting at home, the 25-year-old star was involved in three goals during a three-minute span.

"He’s worked hard," Ferguson said of Rooney. "He’s done really well in training.”

Seattle was strong out the gate, outshooting Man United 6-0 in the first 15 minutes. But Owen, who had a goal in a win over the New England Revolution last week, quickly changed that trend as he knocked in a header off a cross from Evra.

“A strange game because the score didn’t reflect the chances," Ferguson said. "In the first half, the Sounders had two or three good chances and our goalkeeper made two great saves. Kasey Keller made a couple good saves himself. I think our second goal opened the game for us."

Diouf had Manchester United's second goal in the 49th minute, receiving a long feed and taking advantage of some poor goalkeeping from Terry Boss, who replaced starter Kasey Keller at the half.

Boss certainly wasn't the boss in the second half. That title belongs to Rooney.
