Goal.com rates the players on show in the surprising win by the visitors, who earned their first victory at Mestalla since the 1996-97 season
By Roger Gonzalez
He was too far out on Sociedad's goal and it cost his team. He had to deal with little but is the culprit for not saving the crucial one. An untidy display, one damaged by a single poor mistake.
Average at best, the veteran was a step too slow to the ball. He tried to help the attack late on by pushing forward but may have been better off on the bench. Only once did he really contribute with an important clearance.
Will be saddened to see replays of the goal. He blocked the initial shot and a fortunate bounce saw the next effort go in. The French defender did have a decent game overall, though, heading out numerous crosses.
A quiet performance. The Spaniard made the occasional clearance and tackle and held his position well, but he was nothing to call home about. Did not make any major mistakes, though.
Subbed off in the second half for his lack of efficiency going forward. The defender usually provides quality balls from the flank but failed to really contribute much of anything. Looked frustrated and tired.
Many Valencia fans will be calling for Albelda in the lineup as the Turkish midfielder just isn't cutting it. He was beaten too easily and lacked skill on the ball. Saturday was just another example.
He was his side's best player for the first 20 minutes. After that, he was one of the worst. Anonymous until being taken off in the second half, Feghouli lacked passion and speed, also picking up an injury after a nasty fall.
The former Boca Juniors star initiated nearly every attack for Los Che and will be disappointed that his team had nothing to show for it. His strength on the ball allowed his team to maintain possession, while also providing some stellar passing and a shot from time to time. One of his side's best performers.
His entire showing will be remember for his late steal, infiltrating the box and making a poor decision to hold onto to the ball. His team-mates were in front of goal waiting for the pass, but he took the wrong option, essentially costing his team a late draw.
The midfielder has yet to wow the fans at the Mestalla. One has to wonder how many more chances he will get. He lacks confidence, and this game isn't going to help as his passing and his timing was well off the mark.
The former Mallorca star had numerous chances throughout but just couldn't find the back of the net. The majority of his opportunities were in the air, and he did a good job to make contact. Just didn't have any luck as his effort against the crossbar will show.
Added little as a substitute 10 minutes into the second half. Never really got comfortable and was lucky not to see a second yellow.
The young attacker never really got into the contest in his 20-minute appearance. Many won't even remember he played or if he touched the ball. Missing in action.
The former Gremio man was brought on with just under 30 minutes to go and added a lot to his side, helping Banega with possession and improving the attack, though no equalizer was created.
The custodian was one of the best performers on the night, denying Aduriz twice in the first half, while also looking strong on crosses, safely plucking the ball out of the air nearly every time.
The young defender was caught ball-watching on a few crosses, but it was an overall decent performance as he managed to help slow down Pablo Hernandez and help hold onto the advantage as Valencia pressed forward late.
Pablo Hernandez was often forced to move towards the middle of the field to find the ball because of the Sociedad defender's ability to shut down the wing. Estrada was key on both ends, also doing well to find Prieto and start the counter.
The Spaniard was not called upon much to mark Aduriz after early chances, but he did earn his money by helping the defense hold its shape and really turn Valencia's attack into a strategical game and not one of speed. Solid effort.
Resembled a bull with his pace going forward. He was more of a factor in attack than in defense, showing some nifty footwork and speed to blaze down the left. At the back, Feghouli had a bit too much space, but that's the price you pay for attacking. In the end, it didn't matter.
The young midfielder did a wonderful job to contain Parejo, not allowing the Valencia man much of anything. He also did a solid job in forcing the player with the ball to either side, looking to create tough situations.
Lively and elegant, the midfielder caused a bit of trouble on the right with his skill. His stellar passing and fine crosses posed quite a threat early on, though he did not make the big impact he would have liked.
The veteran had his hands full with Banega, chasing around the Argentine all night. His lack of speed and strength showed as the Boca Juniors man maintained possession for long spells while heading towards goal. Was subbed off late on.
A bit of a quiet night. The Sociedad man did play a few average balls wide, but he really never got into a rhythm, failing to provide much-needed through balls.
The quick Frenchman has plenty of quality, he just didn't have many opportunities to show it, until the second half. His effort after the break fired his team to victory after a wonderful goal, while also adding a few lovely moves to wow the Mestalla crowd.
Hardly involved. The attacker saw the ball a bit but did nothing more than play it wide or back. Was taken off for Vela in the second half.
Brought on to waste time late in the game.
The African speedster was introduced in the closing stages and added to the much-needed possession to wind the clock down.
The former Arsenal man had no chances on goal in his spell on the field and lost the ball several times. Was just sloppy.
