The New York Red Bulls took a crucial 2-0 win from Portland on Saturday night, jumping the Timbers and taking the driver's seat in the race for the playoffs.
Dane Richards scored in the 21st minute with a brilliant solo run and a nice finish to give New York and early lead.
The Red Bulls managed to keep the clean sheet despite some very nervous moments, and in the 66th Luke Rodgers put the match away from the penalty spot after a Thierry Henry shot was handled in the box.
The win leaves the Red Bulls in sole possession of the tenth and final playoff spot for the moment, but will face a tricky road test next week against Toronto.
"With the drama of the week, we wanted to step up and show everyone that everything is fine," Tim Ream said.
The Timbers will face off with Vancouver next Sunday at BC Place. "We're going to try to get into the playoffs for our fans," Kenny Cooper said. "I think they deserve it."
