Real Salt Lake emerged 2-1 winners at Seattle Sounders FC in a lively game that saw a missed penalty, two red cards and a bizarre own goal. Kasey Keller put the ball into his own net before Freddy Montero's equalizer on the stroke of halftime. However, Alvaro Saborio grabbed the winner in the 55th minute and RSL held on for a hard fought win.
Seattle's passing stood out in the early minutes, but in the 12th minute Salt Lake took the lead after Fabian Espindola whipped in a low, curling cross which Keller somehow managed to fumble into the net, much to the surprise of the onrushing Saborio.
The home team had a golden chance to equalize in the 17th minute after Robbie Russell tripped up Mike Fucito in the penalty area, but Mauro Rosales fired wide left to the disappointment of the crowd at CenturyLink Field.
Real Salt Lake was reduced to 10 men for the second straight game in the 35th minute after Tony Beltrain was shown a second yellow for a hard foul on Mauro Rosales. The match took an even stranger turn four minutes later. Jhon Kennedy Hurtado was issued a straight red card by referee Mark Kadlecik after he appeared to catch Alvaro Saborio in the face with an outstretched arm.
Seattle managed to equalize in the second minute of first half stoppage time through Freddy Montero, who finished off an excellent interchange between himself and Mauro Rosales.
The parity would not last long after the break, though. Saborio had his initial shot blocked by Tyson Wahl, but the Seattle defender could not clear it out and Saborio struck a vicious left footed finish past Kasey Keller.
As expected, Seattle pushed the issue after Saborio's goal, but couldn't find a way through. Most notable was Nick Rimando's save with his face on a shot from Tyson Wahl off a corner kick.
Seattle failed to keep pace with Los Angeles in the race for the Supporters' Shield, while Real Salt Lake further cemented its claim for a wild card berth.
