Matt Reis pulled off seven saves but eventually conceded in the 90th minute and was ejected in injury time during the Revs' 1-1 draw with Houston.
The Revolution got off to a flying start. Chris Tierny rattled the upright with a free kick just minutes after kickoff, and New England pulled ahead in the fourth minute. A scramble in front of the Dynamo net eventually found the unlikely Ryan Conchrane, who pushed the ball into the back of the net of his former club.
The story of the match from that point until the 90th minute was Matt Reis. The New England goalkeeper pulled off seven saves, some of them stunning, to keep Houston at bay and preserve his side's fragile lead.
Reis even got a paw to Carlo Costly's 90th minute header from a corner, but could do nothing about Bobby Boswell's cleanup job to sweep home.
In injury time three players chased a ball out of bounds. Adam Moffat shoved Pat Phelan into the boards, earning a second yellow and the ire of Reis. The goalkeeper joined Moffat in seeing red, with referee Michael Kennedy punishing him for abusive language.
