The Chicago Fire put an end to its string of two consecutive losses by drawing 1-1 with the Philadelphia Union.
Featuring a new 4-5-1 formation and two newcomers, including former Mexico international Pavel Pardo, Chicago had the best of the early possession, which resulted in a few long-range efforts. Sebastián Grazzini, making his debut as well, skied a shot onto the roof of the net after cutting in from the right flank, and Marco Pappa also drilled a left-footed shot at goal from distance.
Philly's Veljko Paunovic showed them both how it's done just after the half hour mark. His low blast from 25 yards out rippled the netting and gave the Union the lead.
In the second half, Pardo showed just why the Fire was willing to move Logan Pause out of position to accommodate him. The Mexican played a long ball over the top which Patrick Nyarko centered after racing to the touchline. Dominic Oduro's shot was blocked, but only as far as Pardo at the top of the box. The 35-year-old side-footed his shot toward the far corner to equalize.
Faryd Mondragon pulled off a couple point-blank saves to make sure the match finished at one apiece.
