Vancouver Whitecaps 0-1 Columbus Crew: Jeff Cunningham equals MLS record for goals scored

Jeff Cunninham tied things up atop the MLS goalscoring charts again by scoring the winner over the Vancouver Whitecaps.

Jeff Cunningham scored a last-minute winner to equal Jaime Moreno's all-time MLS scoring record at 133. Josh Gardner dumped a cleared corner back into the box and Cunningham, who was likely offside, connected with his head to seal all three points.

Earlier in the match, Terry Dunfield missed a penalty for Vancouver. Will Hesmer dived to his right to parry the weak effort.

The Whitecaps even had the better of the earlier going, with Shea Salinas pinging a low drive off the post. However, the momentum shifted when Salinas was harshly ejected for a studs-out challenge and Cunningham's winner means Vancouver has lost four on the trot.

The strike is Cunningham's first this year, after combining for 28 goals in the two seasons prior.

"It is obviously very disappointing," said Whitecaps FC head coach Tom Soehn. "We had a lot of young, fresh legs and for the most part, they did a good job of executing our tactics and keeping them under pressure and creating chances. Yet, you have to finish your chances and then with the energy that we put into the game, we have to reward ourselves. You have to take advantage of them and we didn’t.

"The only important stat on the stat sheet is wins and losses, and they got the goal and we didn’t, so we are very disappointed, especially here on our home turf."
