Nancy 2-1 Paris Saint-Germain: Mollo strikes late as Ancelotti’s side suffers title setback

The Parisians have now gone three league games without a win as a late defeat left them second in Ligue 1 behind Montpellier having played a game more.

Paris Saint-Germain has seen its Ligue 1 title challenge rocked to the core after suffering a shock 2-1 defeat against a vibrant Nancy outfit.

Once again, les Parisiens fell behind as Bakaye Traore deservedly opened the scoring for the home side, and it took a goal from Mohamed Sissoko to change the course of the game. PSG appeared the likelier side to snatch a winner, but with only seconds remaining, Yohan Mollo’s shot from the edge of the box found the net to steal all three points for Jean Fernandez’s side.

After recent disappointing displays, visiting coach Carlo Ancelotti made alterations to his starting XI, leaving stars such as Nene and Mamadou Sakho to brew on the bench.

The controversial and wholesale changes seemed to backfire in the first half, as a lively Nancy side enjoyed the better of the game, grabbing the lead with its first meaningful attack when Traore poked home after neat work wide on the left by Mollo.

Mollo would torment the PSG defense throughout, yet it was center back Andre Luiz who instantly threatened to double the advantage of Jean Fernandez’s side, clipping the top of the bar with a ferocious drive from range.

Before the break, Traore had drawn a further save from Salvatore Sirigu and Salif Sane skimmed a dangerous shot wide of les Parisiens’ goal, while the title hopefuls had struggled to muster a worthy attack.

Initially, there was little change in PSG’s lackluster approach after the break, but the leveling goal brought a better attitude from the Parc des Princes club. Sylvain Armand’s delivery from the left was converted deftly by the head of Sissoko, and this would swing the momentum of the game around.

Suddenly PSG had some confidence, and the club displayed more fluidity in its play. Javier Pastore, who was incredibly underwhelming overall, quickly flashed a shot wide of goal, and a couple of minutes later Guillaume Hoarau went equally close with a headed attempt.

Hoarau would again be frustrated moments later, with his diving header superbly pushed clear by Guy N’Dy Assembe.

For another 10 minutes the home goal would come under persistent pressure. Pastore slightly over hit a threaded pass, allowing the Nancy goalkeeper could intercept at the feet of Jeremy Menez, while a thumping Blaise Matuidi drive would also be repelled by the Cameroon goalkeeper.

After the momentum had faded, Ancelotti altered his tactics, and the introduction of Maxwell and Kevin Gameiro nearly produced an instant result, but the former Lorient man had his effort blocked in the box after showing neat footwork.

With 89 minutes on the clock, though, Mollo made his play on the counterattack, sending an accurate shot into the corner of the net to win the game for Nancy, condemning PSG to a first league defeat under Carlo Ancelotti.

With Montpellier inactive this weekend, PSG will not immediately lose any ground to the Ligue 1 leader, but this defeat could well do long-term damage to the capital side, which is level on points with la Paillade at the summit of Le Championnat at present.
