Borussia Dortmund and Borussia Monchengladbach had to settle for a 1-1 draw in a thrilling game at Borussia Park on Saturday afternoon. The result sees both teams drop one place in the standings after Bayern Munich's win over Werder Bremen.
Robert Lewandowski opened the scoring with a header in the first period, and prompted Dortmund to take its foot off the gas. This was punished by Mike Hanke in the second half as Gladbach earned a deserved point.
Both teams employed a careful approach early in the game as chances were few and far between in front of the goalkeepers. The visitors slowly began to grow into the game, but were leaving themselves susceptible on the counter.
In the 9th minute Marcel Schmelzer had to clear the ball off the line after Raul Bobadilla managed to chip over Roman Weidenfeller as Gladbach caught the reigning Bundesliga champions napping with a quick break.
Jurgen Klopp's team responded well as moments later Lewandowski was presented with a great chance as he only had to beat Marc-Andre ter Stegen, but was robbed off the ball by Roman Neustadter before he could shoot.
Gladbach went close to scoring in the 22nd minute, when a header from Dante narrowly missed the right corner after an excellent delivery by Juan Arango from a free-kick on the left.
Dortmund started to exert a lot of pressure in the following minutes, and just before halftime was rewarded with a goal. Lewandowski took advantage of some shambolic defending by Gladbach as he headed in from a corner on the right by Gotze.
Lucien Favre's men started brightly after the break, but were struggling to create chances and were leaving a lot of space for BVB to exploit on the counter attack.
Just after the hour mark Lewandowski was presented with a golden chance to complete his brace as he received the ball with only Ter Stegen to beat, but completely missed the target with his finish.
Moments later Felipe Santana blasted a free header over the bar as Dortmund was becoming more and more aggressive in the final third. However, Hanke managed to punish its recklessness with a strike in the 72nd minute after a quick break.
BVB had a chance to steal the three points through Gotze, but it was too little, too late as the game finished 1-1.
