Bayern Munich 4-0 Nurnberg: Gomez double and further strikes from Ribery and Schweinsteiger secure Bavarian derby win for league leaders

Jupp Heynckes' men triumph at the Allianz Arena with a convincing victory against their local rival, which never looked like challenging the hosts

By Enis Koylu

Bayern Munich triumphed 4-0 in the Bavarian derby against a bland Nurnberg side which never looked like troubling its local rivals at the Allianz Arena on Saturday.

Mario Gomez got the league leaders off to a flying start, before goals from Bastian Schweinsteiger, Franck Ribery and another Gomez effort secured a convincing victory.

The hosts took the lead almost immediately from the kickoff. Schweinsteiger crossed from the right, and Gomez was there at the near post to head the ball past a helpless Alexander Stephan.

It was the same combination that linked for the second goal. Gomez collected Philipp Lahm’s pass with his back to goal, and laid the ball back to Schweinsteiger who blasted the ball past Stephan from 25 meters.

It was an anaemic performance from the away side, and it could have been facing a three-goal deficit after 25 minutes, when Timmy Simons almost put a corner past his own keeper.

The third goal eventually arrived five minutes from the end of the first half. Ribery collected on the left, moved inside and coolly tucked the ball in at the near post from the edge of the box.

The second period started in exactly the same manner as the first ended – with Bayern Munich dominating possession.

However, the visitors who had the first chance of the half. Jens Hegeler went on a mazy run, and slipped the ball past Daniel Van Buyten to Tomas Pekhart, whose first touch let him down and allowed Manuel Neuer to claim the ball at his feet.

The hosts seemed determined to show there was no chance of a comeback, though. Daniel Van Buyten sent a header narrowly over the bar, before sending a phenomenal through ball to Gomez, who rounded Stephan, but a sliding Philipp Wollscheid prevented the 26-year-old from making it 4-0.

The home side struck the post twice before the fourth goal finally arrived. Toni Kroos picked up the ball on the left, and went down to the byline before cutting the ball back to Gomez, who was left with the simplest of tap-ins.

Fifteen minutes from time, Luiz Gustavo sent a defense splitting ball to Muller, but the 22-year-old’s shot was straight at Stephan, who made a simple save.

It mattered little. Four was enough for Jupp Heynckes’ men, who remain at the summit of the table. Nurnberg, meanwhile, remain in 13th spot.
