Lille 3-2 Marseille: Moussa Sow’s double trumps Mathieu Valbuena brace

In another magnificent fixture between France’s top two sides from last season, it was the champion which came out of the top, winning by the odd goal in five.

Ligue 1 : Moussa Sow (Lille OSC) - (Panoramic)
Lille and Marseille served up another classic encounter at the home of the champion side, which ran out 3-2 victors.

Moussa Sow slid in the opening goal for the home side after quarter of an hour, but a brace of goals from Mathieu Valbuena around the hour mark seemed to have put Didier Deschamps’ team into the ascendancy. LOSC hit back immediately through Aurelien Chedjou, and Sow’s penalty 15 minutes from time proved to be the winner.

After a nine-goal thriller in the Trophee des Champions, which Marseille edged, it was Lille which grabbed the initiative in front of a full house in northern France. A delicious center from Franck Beria invited Steve Mandanda to collect the low cross, but Sow powered onto the ball, beating the keeper to score on the slide.

Marseille actually enjoyed the better of the first half, but though the club mustered more shots than the host team, it lacked the offensive potency of its rival. Indeed, the club were fortunate not to concede on the half hour mark when Dimitri Payet’s fizzing low cross just evaded Sow only a matter of inches from the line.

There was more purpose about OM after the break, and within two minutes Loic Remy’s attempted cross had come back off the inside of the post before being cleared to safety by Mathieu Debuchy.

Valbuena | His brace was not enough

Valbuena, however, had better luck as his effort from 25-yards looped up off a home thigh, leaving Landreau unable to react as the ball spun cruelly into his top corner.

There was more bad fortune for the host team soon afterward. Though lucky to avoid the concession of a penalty as Florent Balmont committed a clumsy foul, Lille would be punished from the rebound. Landreau did well to stop the initial effort from Bruno Cheyrou, but the rebound from Valbuena was too hot for him.

When Chedjou side-footed home Payet’s cut-back four minutes later, Lille had already created several chances to level the match.

Now with the momentum firmly behind it, the home team drew a penalty when Rod Fanni felled Eden Hazard in the box, allowing Sow to send Steve Mandanda the wrong way from the spot.
