Bayern Munich 4-0 Hertha Berlin: Gomez nets brace as early goals down sorry visitors

Manuel Neuer increased his record to 1108 minutes without conceding a goal as Bavarians earned an emphatic victory over their promoted visitors

By Clark Whitney

Bayern Munich extended its run to 12 games in all competitions without conceding a goal as they earned a 4-0 win over Hertha Berlin in the Bundesliga.

The Bavarian hosts went 3-0 ahead within 13 minutes, thanks to strikes from Mario Gomez, Franck Ribery and Bastian Schweinsteiger, after which time the match turned lost its competitive edge and took on the feel of an exhibition. Gomez completed his brace in the second half as he netted from the penalty spot.

It took no time for the Bavarians to find their form, and Gomez opened the scoring after just five minutes as he made a clever turn and fired inside the left post from 20 yards. Two minutes later, Jerome Boateng burst to the end line before crossing low, and Ribery tapped in from close range.

The result was put beyond a shadow of a doubt in the 13th minute when the Frenchman played the ball to Schweinsteiger at the edge of the box, and the vice-captain's low drive nestled itself into the back of the net.

Bayern could easily have entered halftime with a greater advantage. Ribery rounded goalkeeper Thomas Kraft after just two minutes but had his finish blocked, and the unmarked Muller missed a sitter from the center of the box.

The flow of play hardly changed after the break as Bayern continued to dominate, creating chances intermittently in what proved to be a semi-scrimmage. Philipp Lahm forced a stunning save from Kraft and Gomez just missed the far post before the striker completed his brace from the penalty spot. Ribery was tripped inside the box to win the spot-kick, and Kraft almost managed a save, but could not quite redirect the ball wide of his post.

The result sees Bayern move five points clear of Monchengladbach atop the Bundesliga table as it prepares for Tuesday's Champions League showdown with Napoli. Hertha, meanwhile, remains 10th, with 12 points from nine games.
