Bayern Munich extended its winning streak to five consecutive matches in all competitions following a 3-0 win away to Kaiserslautern in the Bundesliga.
A hat-trick from Mario Gomez saw the Bavarians' avenge their 2-0 loss in the corresponding fixture exactly a year ago.
After escaping an early siege, the hosts improved and limited Bayern's chances on goal. However, following a handball from Rodnei, Gomez tucked his penalty into the lower-right corner on 37 minutes to give his side the lead.
Gomez's opener came under some controversy, but was justified by the run of play especially in the early stages. Within the opening 10 minutes, Philipp Lahm played a brilliant 1-2 with Thomas Muller before having his volley sail narrowly wide, and Daniel Van Buyten had a glancing header saved by the in-form Trapp. Bastian Schweinsteiger also had a long-ranged blast parried, and Martin Amedick nearly headed the ball into his own net.
Things went from bad to worse for Rodnei and Kaiserslautern in the 55th minute as the Brazilian conceded another penalty, this time to Thomas Muller. Gomez had his initial spot kick saved by Kevin Trapp, but managed to tap home the rebound from close range.
Encouraged by his first two goals, Gomez completed his treble on 69 minutes with a clinical finish, after being set up by the brilliant Muller.
Chances for Kaiserslautern were non-existent, with Bayern completely dominating the midfield. The hosts were powerless through the center and had precious few set plays. After falling 2-0 behind, FCK appeared to succumb to defeat, and the last half hour of the match turned into more of an exhibition than a competitive match.
The match reached a nadir for Kaiserslautern in the 90th minute as Ivo Ilicevic received a straight red card for a petulant kick on Anatoliy Tymoshchuk.
The result sees Bayern move top of the Bundesliga, with nine points from four matches, and still only one goal conceded. Kaiserslautern now find themselves deep in the relegation zone, with just two points.
