West Brom 3-0 Blackburn Rovers: Fortune and Ridgewell add to Olsson own goal to give Baggies first win in five

Blackburn's future in the Premier is pushed into further doubt as its poor away form continues after conceding three during a resilient Baggies performance

An early own-goal from Martin Olsson, a second half effort by Marc-Antoine Fortune, followed by Liam Ridgewell’s first-ever goal for the Baggies earned a 3-0 win for West Bromwich Albion as Blackburn Rovers fell deeper into the relegation zone.

A goal within the first 10 minutes saw Rovers face an uphill battle early on, the Frenchman then doubled Albion's lead against the run of play with a close finish, while the header from Ridgewell late on compounded Blackburn's woes.

The Baggies made their early domination count when an 8th minute corner from Chris Brunt saw Gareth McAuley rise above Scott Dann at the back post and head past Paul Robinson. A telling touch by Martin Olsson on the way in meant the effort eventually went down as an own-goal.

A few minutes after the half hour mark Blackburn had its best chance up to that point, when an in-swinging cross from Bradley Orr met the head of Dann whose effort went straight into the arms of Ben Foster.

The game came alive in the last five minutes of the half with chances for both sides. Mulumbu had a tame shot saved by Robinson, while Junior Hoilett finally showed of the ability that has been impressing over recent weeks with a mazy run in the box where he beat three West Brom men, but he lost his balance just as he took his shot which looped over Foster’s bar.

Blackburn started the second half as it ended the first, Morten-Gamst Pedersen recorded the first effort after the restart with a header on goal.

Foster was then called upon again with a fantastic double save, first from a low shot by Yakubu and then another preventing Orr who had latched on to the rebound.

Rovers continued to pile on the pressure when Yakubu got his third chance in quick succession, a clever pass from Hoilett was met by the Nigerian but his shot flashed over the bar.

In the 68th minute after being on the back-foot for most of the half, West Brom made Blackburn pay for failing to convert its chances and doubled the lead. A fizzing cross from Chris Brunt eventually found its way to the back post where Fortune was waiting, the Albion striker took one touch to control and then fired it past the oncoming Robinson.

Five minutes from time a free-kick whipped in by Dorrans, saw Ridgewell climb above Grant Hanley and nod past Robinson. The goal put a gloss on what was a fairly average performance from Hodgson’s side.

A late red card for substitute Modeste saw Rovers end the game with 10 men and made it four red cards in three Premier League games between the sides. The loss was Blackburn’s third in a row, and sees it remain in 18th place.
