Player Ratings: Norwich City 1-2 Manchester United

Ryan Giggs had a quiet first half before making a key difference late on in his 900th Red Devils appearance, while Paul Scholes and Grant Holt were also among the goals.

    John Ruddy

This was the goalkeeper's first chance to impress after being overlooked for the England squad despite good form, and he took it. Made two important first half saves diving low to either side in denying first Welbeck and then Hernandez. A solid showing.

  • Adam Drury

    Adam Drury

Had a very poor period in the first quarter of the game, giving the ball away more than once as Nani's threat seemed to scare him. The Portuguese proved toothless, though, and Drury relaxed.

    Zak Whitbread

Made one vital clearance when Welbeck looked to have flicked it past Ruddy and otherwise had a solid performance against an underachieving forward line.

  • Elliot Ward

    Elliot Ward

Relatively untroubled from the center back apart from the odd venture from Hernandez and Welbeck early on.

  • Kyle Naughton

    Kyle Naughton

Had a couple of key interceptions in the first half and the occasional cross, too, finally occupying his preferred right back slot. Giggs had it best when central, which says a lot.

  • Bradley Johnson

Bradley Johnson Flop of the Match

The burly midfielder got booked early for a very clumsy challenge on Nani that could maybe have been dealt with even more harshly. Had a difficult game overall - he still seems too leaden at times to really be effective enough. Substituted after 63 minutes.

  • Andrew Surman

    Andrew Surman

Norwich preferred to attack down the right flank rather than the left for most of the game, so opportunities were few for Surman. His industry was there for all to see as ever.

  • Anthony Pilkington

    Anthony Pilkington

Particularly in the second half, the winger seemed to be City's main threat, delivering multiple left-footed crosses from the right flank. Somewhat surprisingly, he was taken off with 20 minutes left for Aaron Wilbraham, a striker who has barely featured this season.

  • David Fox

    David Fox

Delivered one or two useful free kicks and passed solidly from deep without ever being particularly penetrative.

  • Grant Holt

    Grant Holt

Struggled for long periods to get the best of the United defense but improved when Hoolahan appeared behind him. His equalizer, short-lived as it was, was taken with real excellence.

  • Simeon Jackson

    Simeon Jackson

Energetic as always but found it difficult to find any space, particularly once Rio Ferdinand moved over to mark him. Withdrawn at halftime as Lambert sought a tactical reshuffle.

    Wesley Hoolahan

Added to Holt's game upon coming on at halftime and had one decent chance to shoot which he hit over.

    Elliott Bennett

Made little impact after coming on for the final 25 minutes.

  • Aaron Wilbraham

    Aaron Wilbraham

Surprisingly replaced Pilkington but justified his introduction by harrying defenders and unleashing one bullet of a long-range shot, well saved by De Gea. A fascinating cameo.

David de Gea Top of the Match

Tested early and often by Norwich but responded very well, making a very useful block with his foot to deny Pilkington and also plucking a Holt header out of the air in the first half. His flying save to keep out Wilbraham's fierce second-half shot was sublime.

  • Patrice Evra

    Patrice Evra

Turned frequently by Anthony Pilkington and did not get forward with any regularity - the United captain still seems a way short of the player he was two seasons or so ago.

  • Phil Jones

    Phil Jones

Was not often tested by Andrew Surman on the United right and got forward in the later stages to deliver a beautiful cross - unluckily not converted by Giggs.

  • Rio Ferdinand

    Rio Ferdinand

Capable as ever, the old head was equally comfortable in restraining the industry of Grant Holt before tackling Jackson just as well after swapping around with Evans.

  • Jonny Evans

    3.00

    Jonny Evans

Struggled to deal with the sprightly Jackson in the early stages but fared much better once he moved across to mark Holt instead. Yellow-carded right at the start of the second half upon Hoolahan's arrival but did not have as much trouble as that challenge initially suggested.

  • Ryan Giggs

    Ryan Giggs

On his landmark 900th Manchester United appearance, the Welshman’s only action of note in the first half was being played in on the edge of the Norwich area very early on and being tackled superbly by Ward. He picked up in the second, though, nodding one against the bar before writing an incredible script by turning in the dramatic winner. He's still got it.

  • Michael Carrick

    Michael Carrick

Did not do much to suggest that Stuart Pearce was wrong to overlook him for England. Facing a quickly-booked Bradley Johnson in the centre of the park, Carrick made the simple passes work but no more. Restrained.

  • Nani
    29
    20
    2.50

    Nani

In the opening minutes it looked like the Portuguese was going to have a blinder but, having impressed with fleet footwork and a solid cross for the Scholes opener, the winger tailed off remarkably for the rest of the game. A real letdown, with more than one pass completely misplaced.

  • Paul Scholes

    3.00

    Paul Scholes

Made something of a retro late run into the area that put him in the ideal position to put away the opener with a simple header. His distribution in the centre of midfield was typically unerring.

  • Chicharito
    41
    31
    3.00

    Chicharito

Displayed some adventure up top in tandem with Welbeck, the two working promisingly together, but faded along with the rest of the side as the first half wore on. Replaced by Young as a result in the second.

  • Danny Welbeck
    27
    42

    Danny Welbeck

His partnership with Hernandez looks to have promise, each teeing up the other for a saved shot in the first half, but had two great chances after Holt's equaliser and completely messed up one of them with his head. Lucky that Giggs spared his blushes as it turned out.

    Ashley Young

Added some much-needed spark to the away midfield after his second-half introduction. His cross for Giggs' winner was excellent.
