Live Commentary

  • The final whistle goes and Tottenham have beaten West Brom 1-0. This affair was far from pretty which was not to be expected before the game kicked-off though Spurs have won ugly, as they stay in touch with the Manchester sides in their bid to win their first Premier League title.
  • 90' + 3'
    Yellow Card Simon Cox
  • 90' + 2'
West Brom pressure here as they win a succession of corners though Friedel claims the second to the relief of the home support.
  • 90'
A groan from the Tottenham fans as the fourth official shows there are to be 5 minutes of time added on. West Brom are hoofing the ball forward as they look for any opportunity to grab a late equaliser.
  • 89'
    Yellow Card Paul Scharner
  • 87'
Into the last 5 minutes here and Tottenham are still leading 1-0. This performance has been far from their best but if they do secure all three points it will certainly be seen as hard-earned win.
  • 85'
That Tchoyi effort has sparked Spurs into life once more as Defoe turns smartly before playing in Kranjcar who see's his shot blocked by McCauley.
  • 83'
West Brom have started to push forward now as they look to steal a point. Substitute Somen Tchoyi has an effort though Friedel is more than equal to it.
  • 81'
With less than 10 minutes remaining both sides have used all their substitutes with both managers sure to complain about the fixture congestion after this one.
  • 79'
    SubstitutionGeorge Thorne Somen Tchoyi
  • 79'
A rare venture forward from West Brom see's Gonzalo Jara waste an opportunity as he flashes an effort wide after good work from Morrison.
  • 77'
Niko Kranjcar has come on for Livermore who has had to come off after only coming on as a sub himself in the first-half although better news for Kaboul as he returns to the field.
  • 76'
    SubstitutionJake Livermore Niko Kranjcar
  • 75'
Worrying moment for Tottenham as Livermore and Kaboul clash heads and both live the field for treatment. Spurs can hardly deal with any more injuries!
  • 72'
Both sides have really been off their game this evening as West Brom are clearly struggling with a miss-match side whilst Tottenham look tired. Gareth Bale and Jermain Defoe have been the two stand-out performers for the home-side.
  • 69'
Tottenham are really pushing for the second here as the West Brom resistance has been broke. Defoe is looking lively as he wins a corner for his side.
  • 67'
    SubstitutionWilliam Gallas S. Bassong
  • 66'
    SubstitutionGraham Dorrans James Morrison
A couple of changes made by both sides as the injuries continue to rack up. West Brom will have to push forward now to get back into this one which could leave some holes at the back.
  • 63'
    Assist Gareth Bale
  • 63'
    Goal Jermain Defoe
And the deadlock has finally been broken as Jermain Defoe pokes past Foster! It was a neat turn from the little striker who made no mistake from just yards out to finally beat Ben Foster.
  • 60'
Again West Brom show the threat on the break as Simon Cox forces Friedel into parrying his effort. Cox cut-in off the left and tried to find the near post but it was a relatively comfortable stop for the American.
  • 58'
Paul Scharner makes a reckless foul on Assou-Ekotto and from the resulting free-kick Luka Modric hits it over. You would imagine it is only a matter of time before Spurs score.
  • 56'
West Brom look like they have come to defend for a point this evening and are really frustrating Tottenham. The home crowd are unsettled as they sense a disappointing start to 2012.
  • 54'
West Brom chance as Dawson heads wide as they continue to look dangerous on the break. Dawson has been a constant threat in the Tottenham box and could have really punished them there if he had managed to direct his header on target.
  • 52'
    Yellow Card Graham Dorrans
Maybe a tactic being used by West Brom to keep tacking Gareth Bale hard as Graham Dorrans is handed a yellow now for a tackle on the Welshmen.
  • 50'
Big chance for Spurs as Jermain Defoe close agonisingly close. Van der Vaart whipped in a low cross and Defoe nipped in to flick it past Foster but it went just wide.
  • 47'
    Yellow Card Billy Jones
Nervy half now for Billy Jones as he must contend with Gareth Bale after being handed a yellow card for a tackle on the Welsh winger.
  • 45'
The second-half gets underway with Tottenham restarting. There has been no half-time changes though with some obvious tired legs I am sure it won't be too long before both managers start to ring the changes.
  • The half-time whistle goes and the score is 0-0. Tottenham have certainly been the more positive in this half though have found Foster in inspired form in the West Brom goal.
  • Our man at the ground, Wayne Veysey give us his half-time update: LIVE! Few grounds can usually beat White Hart Lane for atmosphere during night games but it is rather subdued here this evening, perhaps due to the festive glut of fixtures. It looks like it is one of those games where the home team will have to get the fans going, rather than the other way round.
  • 45' + 2'
A bit of rest-bite for West Brom as they break free and win a corner though Graham Dorrans disappoints as he hits it straight into the side-netting.
  • 45'
4 minutes of time added on here as West Brom keep everyone behind the ball desperate to go into the break still level. Van der Vaart and Adebayor have tried their luck but so far its Ben Foster coming out on top.
  • 42'
Quickly approaching the break and Tottenham have really turned up the ante as they look to break the deadlock. There has been a weirdly subdued atmosphere at White Hart Lane this evening as this game has so far failed to produce the goals it promised.
  • 39'
Gareth Bale tries his luck from the edge of the area but Paul Scharner deflects the effort over the bar for the corner. Spurs pushing for a goal before the break.
  • 37'
Less than 10 minutes to the break now and West Brom will be happy to still be level. Spurs have not been at their best but with both sides struggling with injuries it will certainly be Roy Hodgson being the happier of the two managers as things stand.
  • 35'
A rare attack for West Brom ends disappointingly as Simon Cox gets in the way of Paul Scharner who was looking to pull the trigger. The Austrian is clearly annoyed by his teammate.
  • 33'
Billy Jones got his chance in the starting XI after an injury to Steven Reid and has been in fine form of late and boosts his reputation once more with a saving tackle on Adebayor who looked like he was in.
  • 30'
    SubstitutionSandro Jake Livermore
The tough Christmas schedule appears to be catching up with the players as West Brom have to substitute Jerome Thomas whilst Sandro has just pulled up with what looks like a hamstring problem - not good news for Spurs.
  • 28'
Big chance for Tottenham as Ben Foster keeps his side level with a great save. Bale got to the byline before cutting back for Van der Vaart who hit an effort goalwards though Foster tipped it over.
  • 27'
    SubstitutionJerome Thomas Gonzalo Jara
  • 27'
Adebayor is sporting a new bleached blonde look this evening but has so far seen little of the ball as Defoe tries to slip him through.
  • 25'
Thorne gives away a free-kick on the edge of the area and from the resulting set-piece Van der Vaart hits it straight into the wall.
  • 23'
    Yellow Card Jerome Thomas
  • 23'
Tottenham have dominated in possession so far but with the pace of Odemwingie upfront for West Brom they will always be dangerous on the break.
  • 19'
George Thorne has possession for the first time in this one as he looks to make an impression on his first Premier League start. The youngster has just returned from a loan-spell at Portsmouth and has been handed his chance after a host of injuries to the West Brom squad.
  • 16'
First glimpse of the in-form Gareth Bale as he whips in one of his trademark crosses. The winger got to the byline well before trying to find Defoe in the middle but Foster punched clear.
  • 13'
Good chance for West Brom as a free-kick from Dorrans is headed by Dawson. Sandro brought down Odemwingie and from the resulting free-kick Dawson headed just wide to give his side some rest-bite.
  • 10'
Tottenham are in the ascendancy early on here and West Brom will have to defend will if they are to keep out this early barrage of pressure from the home side. Modric is taking control of this one already from midfield.
  • 7'
A lapse in concentration from Kaboul allows Odemwingie to get behind the Tottenham defence though with the Nigerian closing in on goal William Gallas tackles well.
  • 4'
A real fast start to this game as Dawson heads clear bravely for West Brom though Van der Vaart then heads goal-wards but it goes wide.
  • 2'
West Brom start in a positive fashion as Simon Cox tries to break free but is caught offside and then straight down the other end Luka Modric has the evening's first shot.
  • 1'
