Sunderland boss Martin O'Neill has to make do without the services of Marcos Angeleri, Fraizer Campbell, Craig Gordon and Michael Turner (all knee). Simon Mignolet is out with a facial injury.

Meanwhile, Connor Wickham did not feature in the 3-2 victory against QPR and remains a doubt for this fixture due to a knee problem.

Everton manager David Moyes will likely not be able to call upon Victor Anichebe (groin), Seamus Coleman (thigh) or Jack Rodwell (hamstring) due to respective injuries.

Royston Drenthe looks to continue in midfield after providing the assist in Wednesday's 1-0 victory over Swansea, as does goalscorer Leon Osman, who has scored in two Premier League games in a row.

DID YOU KNOW?

  • Sunderland has managed to win only one of its last five home games in the Premier League, with draws against West Brom, Aston Villa and Fulham coupled with a defeat to relegation threatened Wigan. The club came from behind however in its last outing at the Stadium of Light to defeat Blackburn.
  • The Black Cats have accumulated 36 yellow cards and 1 red in all competitions so far this season.
  • The home side has scored 266 goals against the Toffees through the course of history, but has shipped in 290 goals.
  • Everton is undefeated in its last 13 Premier League games against the Black Cats. During this time, the club has managed to register 10 victories and three draws.
  • David Moyes' men have scored only two goals in their last four league games, winning only one of them in the process - Wednesday's 1-0 victory over Swansea. The Merseysiders drew against Norwich, while losing to both Arsenal and Stoke 1-0.
  • If all games ended at halftime, the Toffees would have been joint rock bottom of the Premier League with Wolves.
