Blackburn 0-1 Everton: Tim Howard saves a penalty and watches another hit the post
The Toffees hit a last-gasp spot-kick to seal all three points, and their first win of the season, in an action-packed game at Ewood Park which sees Rovers remain pointless
By Mike Slane
Tim Howard was clutch, and a bit lucky, on the road.
The American goalkeeper saved one penalty kick and watched another hit the post as Everton held on for a 1-0 victory over Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park on Saturday. It was the Toffees' first win of the season.
Mikel Arteta scored the game's only goal on a penalty kick of his own in the 92nd minute.
Howard saved a penalty attempt from Junior Hoilett in the 47th minute and Mauro Formica saw his denied by the post in the 84th before Everton put the game away in extra time.
It was not the first time the woodwork saved Howard in the game as he was beat early in the first half before Blackburn's David Dunn fine shot across the goal hit the post.
After a fiercely contested first half, the game exploded to life 42 seconds after the break with Blackburn being awarded a penalty after Formica went down in the box. It looked like a generous decision with little apparent contact on the play.
Hoilett stepped up to take the kick but was to be denied by Howard, diving to his right to preserve his clean sheet.
Minutes later and Blackburn almost had a second spot kick after John Heitinga brought down Hoilett on the edge of the box. But again Rovers couldn’t profit as Fellaini headed a clear and the Everton defense stood strong.
With time ticking away, David Goodwillie went close, but it was another substitute, Formica, who looked certain to claim all three points. With five minutes to go, he went down under pressure from Phil Jagielka as Blackburn was awarded its second penalty of the afternoon.
Up stepped Formica, but again Rovers couldn't find the back of the net as the Argentine smashed his kick onto the post and away to safety as coach Steve Kean looked on in disbelief.
Everton was awarded its penalty kick after Christopher Samba was adjudged to have fouled Fellaini.
With seconds remaining on the clock, Arteta was handed the responsibility of claiming all three points and the Spaniard sent Blackburn goalkeeper Paul Robinson the wrong way to snatch the win and leave Rovers still searching for the club's first points of the season.
