Player Ratings: Manchester City 1-0 Stoke City

By Wayne Veysey at Wembley

  • Joe Hart

    Joe Hart

Assured and comfortable as ever on the big occasion, and massively effective too, when he blocked Jones' second-half toe-poke.

  • Joleon Lescott
    16

    3.50

    Joleon Lescott

Lost the odd header to Jones but his aerial strength was crucial to City keeping the back door shut. Has ended the season very well.

  • Vincent Kompany

    4.00

    Vincent Kompany

Made an excellent 35th minute interception from a goal-bound Jones shot and stood up brilliantly to Stoke's direct style by mopping up nearly everything in the City box.

  • Aleksandar Kolarov

    3.00

    Aleksandar Kolarov

Made some good romps down the left flank but his final ball was disappointing. Shot from an impossible angle soon after the break when he had a handful of options in the middle.

  • Micah Richards
    18

    4.00

    Micah Richards

Immense display at right-back to completely justify his inclusion ahead of Zabaleta. Threw himself into the challenge in both penalty areas and his forward raids were laced with menace.

  • Nigel De Jong
    17
    3
    3.50

    Nigel De Jong

Had the central acres in a vice-like grip from first minute to last. His desire epitomised that of his team.

  • Gareth Barry
    7
    6
    3.00

    Gareth Barry

Broke forward well from midfield in a slight departure from his normal cagey normal style. Withdrawn midway through the second period for Johnson.

  • Yaya Touré
    38
    10
    3.50

Yaya Touré Top of the Match

Mixture of the very good and the very sloppy from the big man. But the king of Wembley etched his name in City folklore with a brutally triumphant strike to follow up his brilliant goal in the semi-final against United.

  • Mario Balotelli
    31
    14
    3.00

    Mario Balotelli

No question about his appetite or work rate. Hounded City's defenders, tracked back and made some strong, direct runs. Lost his temper in the second half and gave away a few needless free-kicks.

  • Carlos Tévez
    24
    6
    3.50

    Carlos Tévez

Justified his starting place after a month on the sidelines. Had an early shot brilliantly parried by Sorensen and caused problems with his movement and ability to work himself space in the opposition third. Ran out of puff in the second half but got a standing ovation from the City fans when he was subbed in the 87th minute.

  • David Silva
    28
    8
    4.00

    David Silva

Slick display by the Spaniard, who ostensibly worked the right flank but popped up everywhere to lift a great occasion with his velvet touch and vision. But his lack of a killer touch is frustrating. Wasted a golden opportunity to give City a 35th minute lead when he smashed a volley from five yards into the turf and over the bar with Sorensen stranded.

Substitutions

Closed down the game in the last few minutes.

    Replaced Silva in added time.

  • Adam Johnson

    3.50

    Adam Johnson

Made some brilliant, jinking runs and came close to creating a second for City.

  • Thomas Sørensen
    13
    0
    4.00

    Thomas Sørensen

Made a series of excellent reflex saves to keep City at bay and his reading of the game and anticipation was first-rate. Even he couldn't cope with the power of Toure's strike.

  • Andy Wilkinson
    4
    1
    3.00

    Andy Wilkinson

Had a fascinating battle with Baliotelli but handled himself well against the temperamental Italian and was always willing to support Pennant in attack.

  • Robert Huth
    3
    1
    2.50

    Robert Huth

Resorted to the dark arts at times to keep City at bay. Poleaxed Baliotelli with a deliberate looking swing of his left arm to the forward's jaw, then made a lunge at Richards. Can expect a call from the FA on Monday.

  • Ryan Shawcross
    2
    2
    3.00

    Ryan Shawcross

Powerful in both penalty boxes but got caught out at times by City's clever movement.

  • Marc Wilson
    2
    1
    3.00

    Marc Wilson

Defended solidly enough but struggled to cope with the combination of Silva's elusiveness and Richard's power.

  • Jermaine Pennant
    10
    0
    3.00

    Jermaine Pennant

The most precise performer in red-and-white with some excellent crosses and never gave up trying to conjure something on the right.

  • Glenn Whelan
    2
    1
    2.50

    Glenn Whelan

Ran himself into the ground trying to keep up with the speed of City's passing and movement but it was a battle he never looked like winning. Subbed late on.

  • Rory Delap
    1
    2
    3.00

    Rory Delap

His exocet throws were Stoke's most dangerous weapon but he was less effective with the ball at his feet rather than in his hands.

  • Matthew Etherington
    0
    4
    2.50

Matthew Etherington Flop of the Match

Passed a late fitness test but the first half completely passed him by. Became more involved after the break but he was comfortably quelled by Richards and it was no surprise when he was withdrawn after an hour.

  • Jonathan Walters
    2
    3
    2.50

    Jonathan Walters

Saw far less of the ball than he would have hoped and much of the game seemed to pass him by.

  • Kenwyne Jones
    6
    3
    3.00

    Kenwyne Jones

Always a willing target when Stoke resorted to route one but wasted a brilliant chance to open the scoring when he closed in on goal but toe-poked straight at Hart.

Substitutions

  • Danny Pugh

    Danny Pugh

Replaced Whelan for the last six minutes.

  • Dean Whitehead
    3

    2.50

    Dean Whitehead

Brought greater energy to Stoke's midfield when he replaced the struggling Etherington.

  • John Alieu Carew

    0.00

    John Alieu Carew

Never got a chance to reduce the deficit.
