Joao Plata continues his run of form into first MLS start

Joao Plata was the man of the match at BMO Field Saturday night after scoring the opening goal and creating the game winning goal. Plata provided the spark that Toronto needed after their dismal performance last week while Houston failed to create any decent goal scoring chances until the game was out of their reach.

First Half

Ten minutes into the game Plata sent Mikael Yourassowsky down the wing with a clever back heel, driving down the wing he found Alen Stevanovic at the top of the 18 but was unable to get a clear view of the net. Stevanovic laid the ball back to Julian de Guzman who sent a 30 yard screamer that required a top notch save from Houston keeper Tally Hall.

Toronto continued to concentrate their attack down the wings, sending several threatening crosses into the Houston penalty box. Although they were unable to turn them on net, Peterson's header went high and wide while the Houston defense was able to clear the rest.

Houston nearly caught Toronto off guard in stoppage time of the first half when Brad Davis found space down the left wing, his ensuing cross was inches away from a sliding Cam Weaver.

Second Half

Seconds into the restart Plata one-timed a cross-field pass from de Guzman onto Peterson, who beat the offside trap and was alone on net, but failed to beat Hall. On the 49th minute, Nick Soolsma drove into the Houston penalty area where he was brought down, Plata stepped up to the spot and buried it into the upper 90.

At the 55th minute Cam Weaver received a through ball into the Toronto penalty area but was closed down by the Toronto back line before he could put an effort on goal.

With ten minutes left in the game Plata sent Toronto substitute Maicon Santos alone on net, and the Brazilian made no mistake and gave Toronto the insurance goal they would need.

The Dynamo would get back into the game with three minutes left, as Lovel Palmer hit a low shot that beat Stefan Frei from outside the penalty area.
