TORONTO, Ontario - Toronto looked to be heading towards their very first win against Columbus in its short history. That lasted all of about 30 seconds when Tony Tchani scored his first goal in a TFC jersey after 41 minutes, he then earned a second yellow for unsporting behavior during his celebration.
Toronto fans are getting used to seeing the Reds play the majority of games at BMO Field a man down. The Crew took advantage of their man advantage and scored the tying goal in the 48th minute.
First Half
After 10 minutes Julian De Guzman found space down the left flank and hit a cross into the penalty area that Jacob Peterson was just inches away of getting his head onto. Eight minutes later Alan Gordon sent Martina chasing a through ball down into the left corner who then laid it off to Danleigh Borman, his cross was once again aimed at Peterson but he could not out jump Rich Balchan.
On the quarter hour mark Gordon sent another through ball for Martina that put him alone on net, but his low drive to the corner could not beat William Hesmer.
In the 34th minute the Crew had their first chance to score when Emilio Renteria won a ball that looked destined to become a goal kick, he turned and set up a wide open Robbie Rogers from 10 yards out but his shot went just wide.
In the 41st minute Julian De Guzman chipped a perfectly weight ball over the Crew back line that Tchani ran onto and calmly put past Hesmar into the far post. Tchani then celebrated by running towards the stands which earned him a second yellow and an ejection from the game.
Second Half
Renteria's aggressiveness finally paid off for the Crew when he latched onto a cross early in the second half. His header was just out of Stefan Frei's reach and nestled into the far corner of the net.
In the 65th minute Dan Gargan's attempted clearance from a cross launched up into the air in front of the Reds' net. Frei went up for it but Tom Heinemann collided with Frei leaving a loose ball in the TFC area. When no foul was called, De Guzman was able to get to it first and clear the ball out of TFC's end.
Columbus continued to pressure TFC, Robbie Rogers hit a long range missile from outside the 18 that grazed the top of the crossbar. A few minutes later another attempt from Rogers went wide of Frei's post.
In the 77th minute Joao Plata made a run from half line to the top of the Crew's penalty box. After a little one two with Jacob Peterson, Plata's effort at goal was ever rising and went over Hesmer.
