Angelo da Costa
Could do little with either of Pato's goals but got down well to deny Merkel two minutes after the break. It kept Sampdoria in the game at a crucial time.
Battled with Milan's Oddo out wide, his exploits going forward did occasionally leave gaps which Merkel roamed into two or three times.
Caught out by the skills of Pato in front of goal for the second of the Brazilian's double. Redeemed himself in the 43rd minute with a wonderful tackle to prevent number three as Robinho looked to pull the trigger.
Provided the overlap for Mannini down the right but his crossing could have been better. Robinho and Pato rotated out to his flank in the first-half and had plenty of joy.
Allowed the forwards too much space early on but improved as the game went on, which allowed Sampdoria to keep moving forward when balls wouldn't stick with Robinho and Pato.
Excellent covering in the 12th minute to deny Merkel going one-on-one. Sliced an effort wide in space shortly after going 2-0 down. A sprightly performance from the captain.
Found the going tough against an aggressive Milan midfield but never gave up and got himself on the scoresheet with a good header. Gave Sampdoria belief and life in the second-half.
Plenty of runs and the work rate was there from the wideman but the end product wasn't. Antonini prevented him from getting to the byline and putting balls behind the defence.
Shielded his backline well and showed a nice range of passing through the middle which was at times lacking for the hosts.
Tested the Milan keeper in the 28th minute with a shot that almost curled and dipped over Roma. Smacked one shot just wide after good build up play and was powerful in his approach.
Denied time and again by the Milan defence but a lively debut for Samp. Provided a fine cross for Guberti's goal and kept possession extremely well in good area.
Had presence in his box to come off his line to collect crosses but couldn't get to Guberti for the goal.
The Greek defender blew hot and cold tonight. Nesta's replacement made one stunning block to deny Maccarone in the 39th minute but allowed the striker to turn him inside out for Guberti's goal.
The big centre-back shadowed his partner looking comfortable and composed for periods but gave the ball away too often. Defended well enough to compensate.
The captain looked comfortable until Guberti began to run at him in the second 45. Broke down his flank rarely but found Merkel twice with good crosses.
Watched Mannini and Zauri carefully at left-back. His decision making was nearly always spot on but was nowhere to be found for the goal.
Unlike Van Bommel, the Brazilian looked classy in his interceptions and proved a threat going forward too. Supplied the knock down for Pato's first.
Picked out Robinho in the 8th minute, who scored but was offside. Settled in well with his new team-mates and as expected worked really hard. Found Merkel with a wonderful pass at the start of the second-half. A good engine to carry the ball for Milan near the end.
Found twice in good positions by Oddo and should have made the game 3-0 early in the second-half but kept getting into the right areas for Milan.
M. van Bommel
No holding back by the former Bayern man on his debut, the midfield toughman gave Sampdoria a rough ride and kept the ball moving very well.
Had a goal disallowed and went close in the 39th minute, having the ball stolen from under his foot. Struggled to influence the game as much after Sampdoria's goal and eventually replaced.
His link-up play and work outside of the box was inferior to his colleagues but two cracking finishes of individual brilliance won the game for Milan.
- G. Curci
- F. Cacciatore
- Z. Laczkó
Replaced Poli who was pulling the strings in the middle for Sampdoria and his introduction slowed the flow of ball for the hosts. Spread the play wide well and threw himself at a header to find an equaliser.
Tracked back well to make a couple of excellent tackles but wasted a good opportunity rashly shooting in stoppage-time with other options available.
- N. Krstičić
- S. Zaza
- C. Abbiati
A long awaited return for the Czech left-back but gave the ball away with his first-touch.
- I. Abate
- S. Calvano
Continually applauded the Milan fans who were showing their full support on his return to his former club. Almost stole the show with a shot that bent the wrong way from goal. Ran down priceless minutes for Milan.
- N. Oduamadi
He is mortal! Three minutes on the pitch and he didn't score. Almost found himself on the end of a Cassano cross but was offside.
