South Africa 0-1 USA: Debutant Agudelo Scores Late Winner
Juan Agudelo scored late in the United States' match at South Africa and the 17-year-old made history in the process.
By Luis Bueno
Juan Agudelo had a dream debut for the United States national team as the 17-year-old scored the only goal of the game as the United States beat South Africa 1-0 at a sold-out Green Point Stadium in Cape Town.
The win closed out the year for the U.S. but also gave hope for the future of the national team as five players earned their first cap.
First Half
Despite all the youth on the squad, U.S. coach Bob Bradley sent out just one uncapped player at the start of the match as Tim Ream paired with Clarence Goodson in central defense. World Cup veteran Robbie Findley was the lone striker. Findley, though, was unable to create much for the Americans.
Brad Guzan kept the hosts off the scoreboard with a pair of quick saves. First, he stopped Anele Ngcongca and later Bernard Parker as the two South African players got through the Americans' defense.
In the 22nd minute, the Americans got a shot on goal as some strong work led to a scoring chance. Eric Lichaj kept the ball alive on the end line, fed Eddie Gaven who sent the ball to the top of the goal. Robbie Rogers ripped an 18-yard shot on goal but Itumeleng Khune was in position to stop the shot and kept the U.S. from going out in front.
South Africa controlled possession for stretches of the remainder of the first half but couldn't create many opportunities.
Second Half
The U.S. made two changes at halftime, bringing on Teal Bunbury for Robbie Findley and swapping Jonathans - Spector for Bornstein.
Bunbury made an immediate impact and tested South Africa's goal. In the 55th minute, Bunbury got the ball at the top of the penalty area, turned and fired a left-footed shot on goal but Khune was there to make the save.
Later, Eddie Gaven tested Khune from 18 yards but Khune did well to dive and make a save.
South Africa began to move forward and push into the Americans' third of the field, but even with an increased amount of possession, the South Africans couldn't test Guzan.
Late in the match, the Americans got the game-winner as Agudelo and Mikkel Diskerud combined to produce a goal. Agudelo played the ball to Diskerud, who charged through South Africa's defense. Diskerud sent the ball back to the Agudelo who took the ball, knocked it and knocked it off the crossbar and over the goal line.
The goal was historic. At 17, Agudelo became the youngest player to score for the US national team.
South Africa mounted some pressure towards the end but could not get any shots on goal as the Americans did well to kill the game off and leave Cape Town with an encouraging victory.
