Uruguay 1-1 Chile: Alexis Sanchez denies Uruguayans first victory in the 2011 Copa America

An entertaining clash in the Copa America saw Chile's Alexis Sanchez cancel out Alvaro Pereira's strike as both teams earned a point from their second game.

Alvaro Pereira and Alexis Sanchez each found the net in the second half as Chile and Uruguay played out a dramatic 1-1 draw in the Copa America.

With the Estadio Malvinas Argentinas in Mendoza drenched in red and blue, a scoreless first half left three points hanging in the balance during the second 45 minutes.

Solid passing and precision set up both goals as each team walked off the field with one point in the Group C battle.

Uruguay looked to put pressure on Chile right after the opening whistle. The boys in blue were the top side in the opening portion of the contest, using the pressure to frustrate the Chileans, who could not string passes together.

Chile looked to play through Sanchez down the right, but it was its opponent that got the best look early on.

The clearest chance in the opening 20 minutes was for Uruguay as each of its attacking stars got a touch. Off a long ball, Diego Forlan knocked the ball to Edison Cavani at the top of the box with a little header. The Napoli man, with his back to the goal, flicked the ball over his head to Luis Suarez, sending the former Ajax star through on goal, but the striker could not fire home the bouncing ball from the right, hammering it over the bar.

With Chile failing to produce quality looks on goal, Claudio Borghi's men nearly gave up the opener away moments later. Pablo Contreras looked to play the ball back to goalkeeper Claudio Bravo, but Suarez jumped in to steal the ball in the middle of the box, taking it towards the end line before lofting a cross to Forlan near the back post. However, the veteran defender settled the striker's header with his chest and cleared it off the line.

Neither team could find the breakthrough in the opening 45 minutes, but it wouldn't take long for Uruguay to strike.

Pereira found the net eight minutes into the second half thanks to the determination of Suarez, who controlled the ball in the box after a cluster of players could not do anything with it. The striker beat his defender to the end line, sending in a low pass to Pereira, who was standing on the penalty spot with no defenders around him. The former CFR Cluj man took a touch to settle the ball in front of goal before slotting home a low shot.

Chile responded ten minutes later when Sanchez fired home the ball to the right corner of the goal off a pass from Jean Beausejour to level the score. The Barcelona target did well to dig the ball out from under his feet to get the shot off under pressure, using a quick-fire toe-poke.

The winning goal could not be found as both teams took a point. Chile remains in first place with four points. Uruguay is in second with two.

Next, the 14-time Copa America winners will take on Mexico in their final group game. The Chileans will face Peru.
