Jefferson Farfan fired Schalke through to the DFB Pokal quarter-finals.
After coach Felix Magath revealed he would consider extending Schalke's winter break with a satisfactory performance tonight, the Peruvian spared his team's blushes by finishing from a fine ball from Raul.
The winner came following a long build-up from Schalke, who controlled the vast majority of possession, but struggled in attack for most of the match.
With 19 minutes to go, Raul came close, and on 78 minutes, Klaas-Jan Huntelaar missed from close range. Moments before Farfan's winner, Michael Thurk nearly had the go-ahead goal, but Manuel Neuer made an outstanding save.
The result sees Augsburg crash out of the Pokal, while Schalke advance to the quarter-finals where they could face Hoffenheim.
