Bayer Leverkusen booked their place in the knockout stages of the Europa League thanks to a 1-0 victory over Rosenborg, which saw the Norwegian outfit eliminated.
The decisive moment in this game arrived 10 minutes before the break, when Sidney Sam was allowed too much room on the edge of the box to strike a swerving, dipping drive into the corner of the net.
Jupp Heynckes’ outfit were value for the advantage after spending much of the first period pressing. After fending off an early flurry from the hosts, during which Morten Moldskred shot just wide and Rade Prica headed against the outside of the post, the Bundesliga club frequently looked dangerous.
Lars Bender prodded at Daniel Orlund when given a clean sight of the home goal before the same player had a goal correctly disallowed for offside following a low Michal Kadlec center. Bender was having a particularly active game, getting much the better of Anthony Annan in his personal battle, and a minute before Sam stuck the midfielder would draw a save on the stretch from the home custodian.
It would be beyond the hour mark before the hosts would exert any period of sustained pressure. Vadim Demidov forcefully headed a free kick by the back post and Moldskred quickly followed that chance up with an angle drive that was ably fielded by Fabian Giefer.
Moments later the German goalkeeper would be helpless when Prica’s clipped effort deceived him, but the ball trickled by the back post and just out of reach of the advancing Steffen Iversen, who was little more than the length of a stud from forcing it in at the back post.
These efforts would be something of a last hurrah from the home team, who were well contained by their guests in the closing stages. Iversen, who was sporting a balaclava, saw a header drop just wide, but it was a tame manner to finally suffer elimination.
Not only have Bayer booked their place in the last 32, they will also progress as Group B winners with one match to spare due to Atletico Madrid’s shock defeat at home to Aris. All-in-all, this was a perfect evening for Heynckes and his team.
