Bayer Leverkusen began their Europa League campaign tonight with a comfortable 4-0 victory over Rosenborg. Patrick Helmes opened the scoring within four minutes, and Stefan Reinartz netted a beauty before the break. In the second half, Helmes completed his hat trick with a fine pair of goals to seal the win.

The game might have been much closer if not for a calamitous error from Mikael Dorsin, who allowed Sidney Sam to win a long ball and cross to Helmes for the opener. The game opened up after that, and Gonzalo Castro missed a clear chance to double the hosts' lead before Rene Adler made an outstanding save from Rosenborg's Steffen Iversen. After that, it was all Leverkusen. Nicolai Jorgensen missed a clear chance before Reinartz scored an absolute pearler from 20 yards.

In the second half, Sam and Eren Derdiyok fired warning shots before Helmes latched on to a through ball and slipped a shot behind goalkeeper Daniel Orlund to make the score 3-0. Sam nearly struck within seconds, but on the hour, Helmes had a free header and made no mistake in completing his hat-trick.

The result leaves Leverkusen atop Group B, ahead of Aris and defending Europa League champions Atletico Madrid. Rosenborg currently sit fourth, but have plenty of time to make up the difference and qualify for the knockout rounds.
