Bari 2-3 Roma: Last-gasp Aleandro Rosi winner reignites Giallorossi Champions League hopes
Late drama ensues at the San Nicola, as a late Aleandro Rosi goal wins it for Roma deep in injury-time, resurrecting their once-faint Champions League hopes
By Livio Caferoglu
Aleandro Rosi scored a last-gasp winner in the scrappiest of circumstances, after Francesco Totti again had to undertake the rescue act for his team, scoring a brace of set-pieces to ensure goals from Simone Bentivoglio and Erik Huseklepp for the hosts were cancelled out.
The match started in favour of the hosts, as inside the first 10 minutes they set their stall out to attack the Roman resistance, and they were rewarded with the opening goal for their efforts.
A low cross from Jaime Romero hit defender Juan cleanly on the hand, and the referee had no choice but to award Bortolo Mutti's side the penalty. On-loan midfield man Bentivoglio dispatched the spotkick with considerable ease for 1-0, brushing the ball straight down the middle.
However, the Brazilian showed intent to move his arm, not to mention Alessandro Parisi's original cross-field pass found Romero on the right flank, clearly in an offside position.
Just five minutes later, Roma found the elusive equaliser through a set-piece of their own, courtesy of some much-needed Roman magic from the right foot of Er Pupone. A free kick directly central of goal on the edge of the box was awarded to the visitors, and Totti smashed the ball straight down the middle of the net with a thunderous low drive for 1-1.
Despite the rest of the half being virtually all Giallorossi, with the Bari defence in dire straits, it was they who grabbed the game's third goal of the match to regain the lead, as another Biancorossi cross was shabbily dealt with by the visitors.
Romero again whipped the ball in from the right, and January recruit Huseklepp nodded the ball into the back of the net with a bullet-like header on the stroke of half-time. Vincenzo Montella decided to throw on Marco Borriello at half-time, hauling off the off-colour Menez in the process.
It got from bad to worse just three minutes after the break, as De Rossi was sent his marching orders after a petulant elbow in the face of Bentivoglio. The visitors had already one mountain to climb in regards to the scoreline, but now this was to be achieved with just 10 men.
Incredibly, Roma indeed found inspiration again through their captain-fantastic Francesco Totti. Juan seemingly made amends for the penalty he conceded, after being taken out in the Bari box, and the legendary number 10 this converted his spotkick into the bottom left corner to get his ailing team back into the game.
This goal signaled not just his 206th in Serie A, but also the one that sees him overtake Roberto Baggio in the all-time top goalscorers list in Serie A, in fifth place.
The game proceeded with explosive action to the end, with no shortage of drama, as Roma were awarded a second penalty. Kamil Glik was unlucky to have been shown a red-card, despite his efforts in ensuring Marco Borriello couldn’t fire an attempt at goal in the area. Totti’s resulting spotkick was superbly saved by Gillet, after the slightest of touches to push the ball onto the left-hand post.
It was to be the grandstand finale, as firstly Perrotta was the third man to be sent off, with a silly punch into the back of Andrea Masiello, after reacting badly to his original challenge.
With seconds to spare, substitute Rosi popped up in the box after receiving John Arne Riise's dangerously whipped-in cross and somehow scrambled the ball over the line, putting his side firmly back into the fold for Champions League qualification.
