Real Salt Lake - New York Red Bulls: Head To Head Preview
A possible MLS Cup final preview?
By Jeremy Horton and Terence Steed
On Form
Real Salt Lake: RSL continue to grind out results, this time getting a 0-0 draw on the road in Toronto. Thier ability to get these kinds of results has been the difference between Salt Lake 2010 and previous incarnations - the defending champs have only lost once in their last 17 MLS matches. And what's scary about the Toronto game was that RSL dominated and was unlucky to get the win. They hit the wrong side of the post twice and Stephan Frei had to stand on his head a couple of times to keep Real from stealing the full points. That's not a bad outing at one of the toughest road stadiums in the league.
New York Red Bulls: Dane Richards and Rafa Marquez. Unfortunately, neither will be available this Saturday. Tony Tchani is developing very quickly and perhaps he can push his center midfield performances to another level without the shadow of Marquez.
Off Target
Salt Lake: Harkening back to RSL's visit to Cruz Azul in their last CCL game, where oh where did the defense go those last 15 minutes? Sure, the conditions were better suited to hold a swim meet, but allowing 4 goals in 15 minutes is flat out inexcusable. In choking away a lead that would have made history, Salt Lake not only let themselves and their fans down, but MLS fans everywhere else too. Looking at tape from that match, New York should feel better than ever about their chances of scoring goals against this team.
New York: With the team finally clicking, will they be able to cope with the loss of four starters? Rafa Marquez has quickly settled into his role as a deep lying playmaker, but without him the Red Bulls must look elsewhere. Joel Lindpere will be isolated on the left wing and Mac Kandji does not normally look to set up his teammates. Thierry Henry will come deep to offset the lack of service, but the team will probably look disjointed and struggle to create against a solid RSL defense.
Tactics
Salt Lake: A couple of key players will be missing for Real this weekend. Alvaro Saborio will be off representing Costa Rica, with Will Johnson doing the same for Canada. Replacing Saborio with Robbie Findley seems like a no-brainer, but missing Saborio definitely hurts RSL's attack. Replacing Johnson is a bit more tricky, and Jason Kreis has some options there. One option is to go with Nelson Gonzalez and his direct attacking style. The other option is to give the nod to Andy Williams, the logical choice if Kreis wants more possession. But neither of those guys does as much defensively as Johnson which could be a factor in this game.
New York: 4-4-2 Diamond. With four players out playing with their national teams the team must adjust its expectations. In the back, Greg Sutton will come in to goal for Bouna Coundoul and Danleigh Borman will replace Roy Miller at left back. In midfield, Paul Robinson or Seth Stammler will take up the holding midfielder position while Rafa Marquez is with Mexico and Mac Kandji will fill in on the right wing while Dane Richards tries to continue his good form for Jamaica.
Intangibles
Salt Lake: RSL's dominance at home is well-documented, so that's an intangible that shouldn't be ignored. In fact, if Real win or draw this match, they will tie Columbus for the all-time longest undefeated streak at home (22 games). Another intangible working in RSL's favor is they finally get a full week between matches. Thanks to the Champions League schedule, it seems like it's been forever since they have even had a moment to sit down. The rest should do wonders for this overworked and travel-weary squad.
New York: Real Salt Lake’s home unbeaten strike now stands at 21. That provides a lot of incentives to both sides, but the edge has to go to the home side who are easily a more consistent team.
Outcome
Salt Lake: This highly-anticipated match may have lost some of its luster with key players from both sides being away, but there will still be plenty of quality on display to merit tuning in. Should be an exciting, offensive-minded match, but ultimately the home field advantage will rule the day. Real Salt Lake 3-2 New York Red Bulls.
New York: 2-1 Real Salt Lake. The Red Bulls have been playing very well, but Real Salt Lake is a good team and they are a very good team when they are playing in Utah. Jamison Olave will have a tough test with Thierry Henry, but just like Omar Gonzalez, Olave has the physical attributes to frustrate the Frenchman.
