New England Revolution 3-1 Seattle Sounders FC: Three Second Half Goals End Sounders’ Unbeaten Streak
Revs take advantage of defensive mistakes for resounding win.
By John Zielonka
New England got back on the winning track and stopped Seattle’s unbeaten streak at seven. The victory ended the Revs' losing streak at three. Steve Zakuani gave the visitors a 1-0 lead early in the second half. New England responded with three unanswered goals in eleven minutes from Chris Tierney, Marko Perovic and Kheli Dube. The home side took advantage of numerous defensive lapses by Seattle’s defenders to earn three well-deserved points.
First Half
New England (7-12-3) pressured Seattle (9-9-5) early in the match. On a give-and-go, forward Ilija Stolica passed the ball to his partner at forward Dube. The Yugoslavian native received it back and found himself one-on-one with Seattle goalie Kasey Keller. Stolica’s right footed volley was headed towards the left post and required a two-handed save by the Seattle ‘keeper.
The Sounders’ first scoring opportunity occurred in the 15th minute of play. Forward Fredy Montero passed to Zakuani that should have been intercepted by Kevin Alston. The 2009 first round draft pick redirected the pass back to Mike Seamon. New England goalie Matt Reis used his hand to stop the rookie’s right footed strike from going into the net.
The Revs’ Shalrie Joseph headed the ball inside the 18-yard-box to fellow Pat Phelan in the 27th minute. The midfielder’s shot sailed high over the bar.
Five minutes later Dube sent a cross to Perovic on the right side of the six-yard box. His volley was redirected by Keller to Alston and back to Dube. The nimble forward’s shot missed wide left of the net.
Seattle mounted a response in the 35th minute. Midfielder Alvaro Fernandez diverted a ball headed towards the endline to Roger Levesque positioned in front of the net. Reis lunged for the ball and prevented any further threats by the forward at his doorstep.
Four minutes before the end of the half, Joseph hit a shot from 30 yards out. Defender Patrick Ianni lifted his foot and diverted the ball inches from Keller’s outstretched arm and over the cross bar.
The half ended with New England holding the edge in shots, 8-7 (4-2 on goal).

Second Half
Seattle broke the deadlock in the 59th minute on Zakuani's eighth goal of the year. The play started with a throw-in by defender James Riley. Levesque and Alvaro Fernandez eventually passed the ball back to Riley. The diminutive right back trekked across the box and spotted the former University of Akron player to his left. Zakuani settled the ball and shot it inside the left post past Reis to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.
On a New England corner three minutes later, Ianni fell to the pitch inside the New England box after a slap to the throat by Joseph. The rangy midfielder also dropped to the ground after the encounter, holding his knee. Referee Silvu Petrescu didn’t see any infractions that warranted the issuance of a caution.
The fireworks continued on the subsequent play. With a ball headed toward the near touchline, Montero shoved Alston into the advertising boards surrounding the pitch. Petrescu decided the push deserved a booking and reached into his pocket for a yellow card.
The Revs scored on a long throw-in by Alston in the 70th minute. Joseph headed the ball back to Tierney. The midfielder redirected it with a forehead past Keller’s right hand to even the score at 1-1. It was Tierney’s first goal of the year.
New England took the lead in the 73rd minute with a goal by Perovic, his sixth of the season. The Sounders were unable to clear the ball out of their own zone and deflected to Perovic’s feet. He made no mistake in sending a soft shot into the net and a 2-1 score in favor of the home side.
Defending throw-ins continued to plague the Sounders’ defense. Seth Sinovic throw-in was deflected by Joseph to Leo Gonzalez. The left back’s attempted clearance ended up going directly to Tierney. His left-footed one-timer required an outstanding stop by Keller to keep the margin at one.
New England took advantage of another Seattle poor defensive clearance to take a 3-1 lead on Dube’s strike in the 81st minute. Ianni’s soft volley went directly to Dube. He redirected the ball to Stolica and received the return pass outside the box. The forward’s right-footed finish found the upper right corner of the net to give the Revs an insurmountable margin of victory.
Seattle returns home to face MLS Champions Real Salt Lake on Thursday. New England travels West to play Chivas USA at the Home Depot Center on Friday.
