New England - Seattle Sounders: Head To Head Preview
The Sounders head to the east coast.
By Allen Ramsey & John Zielonka
On Form
New England Revolution: Ilija Stolica has been a solid addition to the squad and Kenny Mansally is back among the goals in recent times, but the key to stopping New England's attack is keeping raps on Marco Perovic. The 26-year-old Serbian is a threat every time he touches the ball and is lethal from set pieces. His five goals on the season lead the team.
Seattle Sounders FC: Fredy Montero struck twice in last week’s 2-1 win over the Chicago Fire. He scored again in the mid-week 3-1 U.S. Open Cup victory against Chivas USA, and now has 12 goals in all 2010 competitions. Nate Jaqua made a compelling case for a starting role with two goals in the same game. Steve Zakuani appears to be fully fit again and notched two assists from his left wing slot.
Off Target
Revolution: After a nice run of form from the backline sparked a nice nine-game run for the Revs in all competitions, the defense has started showing signs of reverting to the leaky group that started the season as one of the worst in the league. Playing against the quality that Seattle has in the attack, the Revs better sure up their defensive assignments or risk having another match like the one at Kansas City where they allowed four goals.
Seattle: Blaise Nkufo is Seattle’s second Designated Player, and he’s finding the transition difficult from European football to MLS. Head coach Sigi Schmid replaced the Dutch league veteran with Jaqua late in the Fire game. Nkufo watched as the Oregon native scored twice against Chivas. You have to wonder how patient Schmid will be if his DP doesn’t start producing.
Tactics
Revolution: The good old days of New England knocking the ball around the pitch and playing a pretty game are gone. These days the Revs have to battle in the midfield, stick tight on defense, and try to find a way to create a goal through set plays or counterattacks. It's not pretty, but it can be effective against a team like Seattle that will push numbers forward.
Seattle: Montero is the straw that stirs the drink, and the current tactics play to his strengths as a scorer and playmaker. The Colombian relishes controlling the tempo and flow of the game in the current 4-4-1-1 or 4-5-1 formation. Why would the Seattle coaching staff change a winning formula that’s yielding results.
Intangibles
Revolution: The SuperLiga final is Wednesday and offers New England their best chance at a trophy this season which could make for some interesting lineup decisions ahead of Saturday's showdown with Seattle.
Seattle: The Sounders headed to New England the day after their U.S. Open Cup win in suburban Seattle. Chivas gave the Rave Green a tough and physical game on Wednesday night. A couple players took some knocks and fatigue could be a factor in Saturday’s match against the Revs.
Outcome
Revolution: I don't see any way the Sounders don't come out on top in this one, even if it is in New England. Revolution 1-3 Seattle Sounders.
