Serie A Preview: Bologna - Inter

The Italian champions will hope to start the new season with a comfortable away win.

Starting On The Backfoot

Last season Bologna narrowly escaped from the jaws of relegation from Serie A as they finished seven points and one place above the bottom three. The year before that the Felsinei had finished 17th too, avoiding the drop by just three points.

This time the Rossoblu have started on the backfoot on the eve of their first league fixture of the campaign as coach Franco Colomba has been sacked. Colomba had guided Bologna to top-flight survival last season and it's been claimed by some reports that he has fallen out with club chairman Sergio Porcedda, who stated, “We will take a coach with experience, one who believes in youth.”

Reports in Italy suggest that Mario Beretta will lead Bologna out against Inter on Monday evening, although a replacement is yet to be named. Defender Gyorgy Garics anticipates a tough game against the Italian champions and says, "It is going to be a really hard game, but we will give it our best shot.

"We all want to get back on the field and our fury and rage will make life difficult for them.''

Recovering From Defeat In Europe

Italian and European champions Inter's dream of emulating Barcelona and winning six trophies this year collapsed on Friday evening when they lost the UEFA Super Cup 2-0 to Spanish club and Europa League winners Atletico Madrid.

The way that the Beneamata capitulated was a major talking point, leading many observers to suggest that new coach Rafael Benitez will have to change the way Inter play and doubts have surfaced on whether the Spaniard is the right man to replace Jose Mourinho.

However, Benitez remains confident and says, "We are a bit annoyed. We played badly. We need to look at what we did wrong and learn from those mistakes.

"Last season this team played all the time in counter-attack and we need time to change that approach.''

Benitez has already won his first piece of silverware with Inter this year as they won the Italian Super Cup by defeating Roma but he will have to take care that they win against Bologna on Monday evening and get a victory in their first league fixture of the season.
