USA 0-2 Brazil: Young Samba Stars Regain Brazil's Spark

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- All was right with the world as the Brazilian National Team put on a show on in New Jersey Tuesday night, with goals from wonderkid Neymar and Alexandre Pato, pushing a new-look Brazil past the American side.

A raucous crowd of 77,223 cheered on both sides in an entertaining match that saw two goals.  It could have easily been more as the Brazilians forced several good saves out of Tim Howard and Brad Guzan and rattled the goal posts as well.

The United States handed a debut appearance to Omar Gonzalez and the young centerback did a decent job dealing with the flowing Brazilian attack, while Brazil handed a start to young Santos winger Neymar and a debut to midfielder Paulo Henrique Ganso. Both impressed.

First Half

Early on the USA looked the more dangerous side as Benny Feilhaber played the ball up to Edson Buddle.  Buddle took a touch towards the left wing and played it back inside to Landon Donovan.  Donovan took a touch past David Luiz, and refused to go down after being fouled in the box by Thiago Silva. No call was given, but the ball was cleared for a corner.

Omar Gonzales got his first test on the international stage in the 9th minute as Alexandre Pato took down a long ball at the top of the box with Gonzales as the lone defender.  The AC Milan man hesitated a moment, then blew past Gonzales, but put his shot wide of the far post.

The Brazilians' passing eventually led to a great chance for Andre Santos in the 22nd minute.  The left back got forward down the wing before cutting inside and taking a neat through pass from Ganso between Jonathon Spector and Omar Gonzalez, but the fulback’s one-touch shot went straight to Tim Howard, who smothered the rebound.

The Brazilians were clearly focused on the USA right side with Neymar dancing around Spector.  Finally the tactic paid off in the 28th minute as Andre Santos found space deep down the Brazilian left wing.  The fulback’s cross curled perfectly back from the endline to the top of the six at the far post, where Neymar beat Jonathon Bornstein to the ball and placed his header into the near post corner.

Brazil thought they had doubled their lead only four minutes later, but Pato was deemed to have fouled Howard as he bundled the ball into the goal.  While the Brazilians did a samba in the corner the Americans pushed up through Spector, but he failed to find any of his six teammates ahead of him, instead passing the ball away.

Ramires seemed to feel he should have done more in the 37th minute after Feilhaber gave the ball up in the center circle and the Brazilians broke with four-on-two.  Ganso played Ramires in, but he fired his shot straight at Howard who blocked it out wide with his shins.

Just when it seemed the Brazilians were prepared to finish the half out with only a goal advantage, Ganso laid the ball off to Ramires who spotted Pato darting between the USA center backs near the top of the box.  Ramires weighted the pass perfectly, allowing Pato to dribble easily around Howard and pass the ball into the back of the net.

Second Half

Pato nearly doubled his tally in the first minute of the second half.  Robinho broke down the left wing forcing Carlos Bocanegra across to cover.  Robinho played the ball across the top of the box to Pato who easily cut by Gonzalez, but he fired his shot high into the near side netting.

Dani Alves continued to get forward and nearly created a third for Brazil in the 53rd.  The Barcelona man played a low cross through the USA six-yard box, but it evaded both Pato and Neymar before it reached Robinho at the far post.  Robinho beat Howard, but the post intervened to deny him a goal.

Substitute Jozy Altidore looked lively pushing out wide to collect the ball and drawing several fouls.  Unfortunately, the set pieces led to more Brazilian counters than American chances, including one from Dani Alves to Neymar in the 70th minute that drew a quality save out of substitute Brad Guzan.

Ganso nearly got the goal he deserved for his great set up play in the 78th minute.  The Brazilian number 10 received the ball 30 yards out and hit a driven shot with his left foot.  It curved past Guzan and rattled the near post.

Substitute Carlos Eduardo forced a great save out of Guzan four minutes later.  After a cross from the left wing bounced back to Eduardo, he took his time and hit it low and hard for the near post, but Guzan got down quickly and pawed the ball out for a corner.

Finally, Jonathon Spector got involved in the attack in the 85th minute.  The West Ham defender put in a nice cross that dropped onto the six where substitute Herculez Gomez headed the ball down between the legs of Victor, but the Brazilian goalkeeper got enough of the ball to deflect it out for a corner.
